I would say the choice in Ryder Cup captains for 2014 is a testament to how lean the talent pool of golfers born in the 1960s was. The PGA of America selects someone from a previous generation, and the Europeans pick a journeyman who made one putt a decade ago.

The European selection worries me (as a European), I would have rather had Clarke as captain. Neither Monty or McGinley fill me with confidence, I feel the players seemed to put pressure on the selectors because he is their 'buddy' rather than a great leader.

Clarke officially removed himself for 2014 according to Golf Channel. I really don't think it matters who the captain is on either side, Europe plays better golf at the Ryder Cup and thus they have won for the most part over the past decade or so. I doubt a different captain over the years, including this past year would have changed that. Maybe the U.S. would have a better shot if it was a stroke play tournament?

In team competitions -- as a player, assistant and captain -- McGinley is 11-0. He absolutely deserves the shot.
