Fore Inventors Only is a show that will be premiering tonight, July 10th, at 10PM EST on the Golf Channel.

It is an American Idol-esque show where people audition their ideas relating to golf in front of the panel of three judges where they are told whether or not they'll be advancing.

Anyone else looking forward to this show?

My only hope is that the judges aren't too mean. I'm not a fan of watching the judges be total jerks to some of the contestants, as I saw on American Idol when I used to watch it. I don't watch Idol anymore, but I heard they're getting somewhat more mean seemingly for ratings, which is exactly what I hope this show stays away from.

Out of the demo videos you can watch on the side there, I think the best out of them is the Shaft Skins idea. Not really functional, but it would look pretty good. The rest of those ideas are pretty crazy.

I kind of hope they are mean. If American Idol has proved anything it's that a lot of people don't have anyone who loves them enough to tell them they suck. Some of these folks need to hear it so they can steer their endeavors toward something they don't suck at.

But seriously, I am looking forward to the show.

Looks pretty interesting. I'm hoping they are a little tough, some of the inventions i've seen so far are just horrible. Looking forward to it

It looks very interesting especially considering the little caps they have shown on Monday's Golf Central. I can only imagine the next quick fix contraption (think Tin Cup) some of the peeps will come up with.

Yeah, I can see some of your points about how being realistic can help.

From what I've seen some of the ideas you can see on the commercial or the demo videos on their site seem pretty good. If anyone's seen the commercial, I like the idea for the bag that has a seat you can pull out of it, the travel bag with wheels, and the Shaft Skins on the website seem like they may be a good idea towards children and women or whatever.

I'll probably watch the first couple of episodes & then decide if I think it's worth watching future episodes. I hope the judges are fair & objective and if the inventor thinks the fair & objective judges are being mean, so be it.

It's a virtual certainty that some of the inventions will be, well, not too good.

Well, I think the people are a little smarter than they seem on the commercials, because from what I've seen about 80% of the ideas shown on the commercial look rather dumb, such as the guy with the open hat.

I'm curious to find out about the thing they show in the preview about the judges getting hurt, such as when the woman judge shoots that gun-looking thing, or even more curiously when the guy starts screaming about his mouth burning. If nobody understood the bottom part, the link to the site is atop my first post and you can watch the preview there.

As bad as AI has become, this show should be interesting. I'd watch it live, but I'm on a 6hr jetlag, so it goes on the DVR.

I'm looking for some shaft covers. Very neat idea.

Wow, I am impressed. That show was pretty good. Lots of good ideas.

My favorite guy was the Scottish guy in the beginning with the lost ball timer thing, but there were several other good ideas too.

I thought the timer was one of the dumber ideas that got through, along with the glove caddy thing.

The glove caddy just got through because the girl was decent looking and Allem and Harmon liked what they saw.

Yeah the timer was kind of a funky idea, I just liked the guy for some reason, seemed like a nice guy, though they all did.

The guy who supposedly put everything he had in his invention was good, with the thing to keep your feet still. I couldn't believe the guy who said he put one million dollars in that little sticker for the faces of the club.

I also liked the guy with the Sit and Stand Bag.

I only caught the second half of the show, and the only really good idea was the collapsing club glove idea. There were a lot of crazy people though. EX : Guy with the golf ball launcher.

Heh, yeah, that was a little odd. I felt bad for the guy though and the whole thing with his father. It sounded like a good idea for his father to enjoy himself, but does it really have anything to do with golf? I thought not.

Funny show. I liked the club glider travel bag and the wipe away impact tape. Some of those ideas were flat out ridiculous, but I guess that's what makes the show interesting.

Any thoughts on the second show? I liked the shaft skins thing (couldn't he include a little rip string for graphite shafts?), and... I don't remember much else. I do remember the idiot with the "center of gravity of the earth" golf ball.

I was wondering if he was an idiot or if he was a genius who doesn't have the ability to communicate with people of normal intellect or to comprehend their intellectual limitations. Or maybe he's just from another planet.

    • Personally I'd have them rotate the player who hits the fourth shot and have them hit four shots each time. Then handicap I'd make it 0.25 * A + 0.2 * B + 0.15 * C + 0.1 * (A + B + C)/3.  If you don't want to have someone hit twice every shot, then rather than saying they can for one tee shot, I'd give the team of three one time per hole that they can have one of their players (at their choice) hit a second shot. If they use it on the tee, then they can't use it anymore. I'd think putting is where it could be most valuable since it has the starkest contrast between good outcome and bad outcome, but off the tee if you have nothing in play would obviously be where you'd want it. Do the handicap the same way - the difference then would be that they could always pick their best player to hit the extra shot, but they still get the extra handicap strokes for the worse players so it somewhat evens out. If you're set on only having them hit three shots at a time, then you'd need to figure out a way to handicap it fairly. I agree with Erik in his example that 8.5 doesn't feel like enough. Only one extra stroke for 50-60 extra shots on the round (I'm assuming there will be quite a few putts where the D player wouldn't be needed and they're not going to be shooting 15 under) seems like not a lot. My initial reaction was to say you'd want to double the allowances. If you lose the 5 handicap, then you'd get 0.5 x 10 + 0.4 x 15 + 0.3 x 20 = 17 shots. If you lose the 20 handicap then you'd get 11. 3.5 strokes for losing the 20 handicap seems like quite a lot to me, so maybe split the difference? Something like 0.5 x A + 0.35 x B + 0.2 x C could work. That would be 9 shots if you lose the 20 handicap and 14.25 if you lose the 5 handicap.  If the handicaps are more even, let's say they're all 5 handicaps, 0.5 x A + 0.35 x B + 0.2 x C would be 5.25 shots, while the four 5 handicaps would get 3.5. 1.75 shots is probably not enough for losing the 4th go at every shot. If they're all scratch then both teams get 0. More I think about it, I think multipliers might not be the best option. Instead I'd say the four man team gets the 0.25 x A + 0.2 x B + 0.15 x C + 0.1 x D. Three man team gets 0.25 x A + 0.2 x B + 0.15 x C + 4. I think 4 scratch players would beat 3 scratch players at a scramble by somewhere in the 3-5 strokes range on average. The extra man is worth less the worse they get, but that's getting offset by the shots they would be giving the team, so if you lose a 20, you only get 2 extra strokes. Put another way, this is equivalent to assuming you have a fourth player who is never good enough to hit a ball in play, but has a 40 handicap in return. That seems reasonable to me.
