combination iron sets

I've been intrigued by the idea of going to a wider soled club for my 4i and 5i, I'm going to try it this year. I play i20s and have already purchased a g20 4i and now looking for a 5i. Anybody else tried this? if so, what kind of benefits or drawbacks did you experience. I've hit the 4 a few times at the range and I'm considerably more confidant with it.

I have considered this also as I have a GI set of irons but I I find the short irons hit too high and are a little chunkier than I would like. The only real issue for me is the fact that my irons have very strong lofts and if I were to simply substitute 4 players irons for my 8- GW the loft difference between the 7 (my current GI set) and 8 (pro combo forged) would be 7 degrees. I am not familiar with the lofts of the different ping irons but it may be worth looking into. If the lofts are similar than I do not see it wouldn't work. Good luck.

I think the advantages of an "eclectic" set is each club fits you (at least in your mind if not in fact).  The only disadvantage I can think of is none of club manufactures will pay you a million dollars to advertise their clubs on your bag.

I see that this is quite common when it comes to players irons. It seems that there are alot of people who play a blade/less forgiving iron in the scoring clubs and then switch to something more forgiving for the long irons.

I personally use the Mizuno H4 for 4 & 5 iron and then go to MP-64 for the 5-PW and from Mizunos point of view this was largely what they expected as they only actually release the 3,4 and 5 irons in Europe.

I think as long as you match your sets nicely and even shafts where possible then I think it can be sensible.

I have the entire MP-H4 set and find that it is essentially a combo set on it's own. The 3-7 irons have a hybrid like design while 8-PW are very similar to MP-64s (still a little bigger, but not much). I feel like I get the advantages of a combo set with forgiving long irons, workable short irons, but I also gets a set that completely matches and flows from club to club.
