No, any club.  You can join your local muni course mens club (probably for as little as $30 or $40) and get an official USGA handicap.  There are also several online clubs you can join too.  Try googling "usga handicap service for _____"  [wherever you live] or something along those lines.

It's offseason here. Common in areas where winter course conditions can have an affect on scores. We post scores but they don't have an affect. Ask someone in the pro shop about joining a club. As mentioned you can search it by region on the USGA site. Chances are one or all of the courses you frequent have at least one club. We have 3 at our course.

I was a member of an eClub, an online golf club where you don't join a course just a group, before I joined my country club. Kept my handicap just the same but wasn't a member of an actual course.

sounds like something i would prefer.  if you join a club, do you have to only play on their course to get your handicap?  i like to play multiple courses.  also i would be interested to understand how you get an "official" handicap, i.e. does someone walk with you while you play, or is it just the honor system?

an eclub isnt an actual course. its just a group of people that are not affiliated with any course. they have a few rules like they want you to play a few rounds with other members of the eclub. you have to pm them and setup a time and place. but the hdcp is off of honor system.

    • I never heard dislike for them.  From my perspective, they are just like any other club. Though, they were always probably over-priced, until recently as other club manufacturers have been raising prices the past 5+ years. You had to wait for them to go on sale, which you can get them closer to other club manufacturers.  They sell good clubs. Nothing crazy..
    • Why do so many people dislike PXG clubs and constantly criticize them? All the folks at my club and especially online, I never hear good things about them except from people who bought them and defend them. They look fine to me but curious is there some sort of quality issue or is it just stereotyping the buyers.
    • I have the LM1 launch monitor and I’ve been very impressed. I agree with your assessment and it’s very accurate for me and ease of use is wonderful. The price point of $199 is very hard to beat with this form factor and performance. I was previously using a PRGR.
