Search for new clubs

I am looking for a new set, currently using an old set of wilson deep reds with steel shafts, my price range is upto $600. Ur suggestions? Steel or graphite shafts and why ?

Get a set of used x-22 Callaways or any other game improvement club - wider sole - more back, toe, and heel weighting (perimeter weighting).

Don't do graphite unless you are physically unable to handle a good steel shaft that is suited to your swing speed. While graphite clubs may appear to be desirable, they are not popular in irons as their "kick" is not suited to an athletic swing with much speed.

What is your average score on 18....for real? That would help narrow your search.

If you have time to work on your game, consider Callaway X20 Tours. The X22, regular and Tour, were not as user-friendly as the X20 predecessors.

If you get X20 Tours, watch what shaft you get. Read up on the different shafts and their properties. Stay away from the PX 6.0 unless you have a really strong swing.

If you have a good golf store around you try to test out a few clubs and maybe get fit on a simulator, or outside on a range if they offer that service.  What works for one person may not work for another.  I would do some research online (Golfsmith.com, Golfgalaxy, rockbottomgolf, etc.) and narrow down what you're looking for to three or four brands and go from there .  You can read all you want but you'll never know what's perfect for you until you hit some clubs.

As far as graphite/steel shafts, it all depends on your swing speed.  If you have a slow swing speed (under 90mph) it may be wise for you to look into graphite, or possibily just find a set that has more hybrids.

Consider the Titleist 735 cm's.

They are a combo set that are muscle backs on the short irons (better workability) shallow cavity on the mid irons (forgiveness and workability) and full cavity backs on the long irons (forgiveness).

You can find a set P-3 iron for about 200 bucks on ebay. They are fantastic and the better you get the better they get. With the Callaways you get forgiveness up front, but once you get better their lack of feedback will slow your progression.

Also they are forged so you have a lot of durability when it comes to adjusting the loft and lie.

With summers around the corner , wont be playing much since day time temps tend to reach the 110-120 range so prolly putting the purchase on hold till aug time

Good for you. It is ironic that it is getting too hot for golf for you and it is too cold for us now.

Of course, some of us can fly 700 miles to Florida and get the warm weather golf...not a possibility for me this year.

The general reality is that $200 of lessons and a $200 set of irons will get you into the low 90's or upper 80's if the clubs fit your height and swing.

I am a firm believer that lessons go a long way. If you can keep playing with what you have and get better, there will come a time when you will be able to tell the difference between a good set of clubs from a not good set.
