I've been Playing Golf for: 1 Year

My current handicap index or average score is: 3 for par 3 / 18 for Main Course -

My typical ball flight is: Long, high and straight

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: complete mishit slice out of the blue

Hard to tell from this angle but it looks like you are coming over the top badly.  Hard to tell though.  You mentioned you will get some recent video in the other thread.  Make sure you read the link on how to take the video, and try to get a current one.  We will help you figure out that slice.

Hi Cipher, I think I was too and worked on flattening my swing a little and an inside out swing path which worked really well for the next 3 months.

I was a HCP 4 on the par 3 when the above film was taken. I will update a new film asap. Thanks!

I think your right elbow is getting stuck behind you and that might be what is causing this.  We can wait to see the next video to verify though.

Here is another one of me a month further on - HCP 3 and chipping to a basket 50m away with my lob wedge

Next time you submit videos take a look at this thread, the camera angles aren't great

Backswing on the left pic

So I would look at doing these drills.  For you it's going to feel like the club head works outside your hands on the takeaway, like Rickie Fowler

wow - that's really cool stuff - I was just showing an older example of some swings for fun a few months ago when I could actually hit the ball! :)

Thanks very much, I will get a better video of my current swing and problem and upload and I really hope you can help!!

thanks again!

There's only one problem - when I was swinging like the videos above that I posted - I never sliced the balls. Normally, If I mishit - it would be a fat shot or pushed to the left. The 3 balls that I chipped - The first 2 balls landed 1m directly to the left of the basket and the last ball landed in the basket. My PW in the first frame landed about 2m away from the 110m red flag I was aiming at.

but ok - let me upload my current swing and we can compare.

Yes, but you can see from those videos how you would have developed a slice.  Know what I mean?  It means when you took these videos you were squaring the club face with your swing path.  Now it must be opening to the swing path.  Also are you slicing or shanking(hitting off the hosel)?  I am wondering how you would slice a pitch shot(what you are describing as a chip).  Sounds like you might be shanking the ball.

:) thanks! unfortunately my beginners luck of being able to hit the ball straight and repeating everytime for about 6 months just wore off which left me useless and lost :)

I am not sure if I am shanking - that is why I thought impact tape would help because then I can see what is going on. Is it possible to shank every single shot - even if you drastically change your feet position - club head address from extreme open, neutral to extreme closed, swing path, club type....?

You can shank from any stance, if your club head is coming from over the top. I know from experience. I was at a range a couple years ago and shanked every single shot.  You should be able to tell by the sound.  Also it is really hard to slice scoring clubs, that is why I wonder if it is not actually a shank or partial shank.  Your feet in these videos look extremely closed.  For short iron shots I would have them at least square, but I like them slightly open to hit a little push to the target.  Look closely at what Mike is telling you and those drills.  Make your takeaway feel like he is describing with the club head outside your hands.  If you can do this it should solve your issue.

Yeah, one of the first things I learned after watching myself on video is how very similar all of the swings are.  For example, you can hit the most perfect beautiful high draw to your target, followed by the ugliest shank, and if you look at each on video, more than likely to the untrained eye, they won't look any different.

So I think cipher is right ... everything that mvmac suggested will apply to you even though you didn't actually hit those shots in the videos poorly. (He's a really good teacher, so I'd pay close attention!) :)

Oh, and one more thing ... for somebody whos only been playing for ONE YEAR, that is a really good swing!  Keep it up.

And you were only hitting 50 meter shots, you won't be able to curve the ball that much from that distance.  Same thing when you're hitting pitching wedges.  Harder to curve the short clubs.  But your tendencies are still there, that's why I made sure to illustrate the direction the club head was moving and how that corresponds to other faults.  Like you said, your misses are pulls which just means you were able to make a correction and get the face to point left enough to match the path.  Not something you want to do when you get into the longer clubs because you'll hit it too low.  And you miss it fat, like I said, wrist angles dumping too soon.  Even though it's a short swing and the shots were ok, the issues are still visible and enough to predict what the effects will be.

Great :) Thanks for your help already - this seems like very valuable and constructive advice. I have been swamped with work this week - but will 100% be on the range this weekend and bring my camera to show you current shots at better angles and hopefully we can work the solution together.

Cipher and mvmac i think are spot on and golfingdad thanks for the info and support :)

I am really very grateful!!

Hi all!

You are all geniuses :) Unfortunately my friend was not there today with his camera - he will definitely come next weekend to film me and I will upload the shots - however, I did the take away as discussed, low and feeling that the club didn't come on the inside of my hands, I turned with the club quite steeply with the wrist break, but then felt like I was flattening my swing on the start of the downswing, so instead of going shallow to steep like mentioned above, that I came steep, to shallow and swung in to out and FINALLY the ball started flying in the air and reasonable straight. I also opened my stance up as per Cipher, and I played pretty well - I did hit some shots not so clean, but that I think because I was too anxious about where the ball was going to go and not relaxed enough - when I relaxed - Hole 3 (Par 4 ) I hit my Hybrid from tee - 170m / 7 iron into the green 140m (8m from hole) and hit a lucky putt for birdie :)

    • A 5400 yd course is not that short for gents driving it 160 yards considering the approach shot lengths they are going to be faced with on Par 4s.  Also, for the course you are referring to I estimate the Par 4s have to average longer than 260 yds, because the Par 5s are 800 yds or so, and if there are four Par 3s averaging 130 the total is 1320 yds.  This leaves 4080 yds remaining for 12 Par 4s.  That is an average of 340 per hole. Anyway, if there are super seniors driving it only 160ish and breaking 80 consistently, they must be elite/exceptional in other aspects of their games.  I play a lot of golf with 65-75 yr old seniors on a 5400 yd course.  They all drive it 180-200 or so, but many are slicers and poor iron players.  None can break 80. I am 66 and drive it 200 yds.  My average score is 76.  On that course my average approach shot on Par 4s is 125 yds.  The ten Par 4s average 313 yds.  By that comparison the 160 yd driver of the ball would have 165 left when attempting GIR on those holes.
    • I don't think you can snag lpga.golf without the actual LPGA having a reasonable claim to it. You can find a ton of articles of things like this, but basically: 5 Domain Name Battles of the Early Web At the dawn of the world wide web, early adopters were scooping up domain names like crazy. Which led to quite a few battles over everything from MTV.com You could buy it, though, and hope the LPGA will give you a thousand bucks for it, or tickets to an event, or something like that. It'd certainly be cheaper than suing you to get it back, even though they'd likely win. As for whether women and golfers can learn that ".golf" is a valid domain, I think that's up to you knowing your audience. My daughter has natalie.golf and I have erik.golf.
