Total putts tells you almost nothing.  I'd prefer putts per GIR and either Scrambling (par for non-GIR), or putts per non-GIR.  You're not getting a ton of pars at your current hcp, so I'd prob go with the putts per non-GIR.....

I'd also recommend a stat that isn't really a standard......I call it flubs.  Tops, fats, whiffs, shanks, etc.....not just shots that weren't good, but the ones that were really bad.  If there are more than a couple of those in a round, it can really point to some ball striking fundamental issues that, once corrected can result in pretty rapid improvement, especially if you can discern some pattern to the flubs.

I record the following:

Score

Greens (and if missed, Up & Down or Sand Save)

Putts

Distance of first putt

Fairways

It takes two lines on the actual card, and using scorecard you can get all sorts of stats back from those 5.

Quote:
From the Scorecard manual

In the top row, the larger number represents score, the arrow for fairway (up if you it or left or right depending on which way it was missed) and the small number is the number of putts.

In the second row you either put "G" if you made a GIR or if not and you had a Up & Down or Sand Save opportunity you put "UD" or "SS." If the attempt at one of those is unsuccessful, you cross it out. The small number there is the distance of your first putt.

Fairways Hit (Important)

Greens in Regulation (Important)

Up-and-downs (Important, and I suppose you could break it down to Sand Saves and non-Sand Saves. I use 30 yards and in for Up-and-downs to compare against PGA Tour)

Total Putts (Not as important, but over time it gives an indication of putting proficiency)

Putts per GIR (Measures putting and how close you are hitting on your GIR's)

These are easily marked on a scorecard. I use one box for score/putts (for example, 4/2). The next box is Fairways/GIR (hopefully, it would be 1/1). The last box for the hole is for Up-and-Downs (either 0/1 or 1/1 or, on a bad hole 0/2 or 1/2 meaning I didn't even get on the green with my first chip). Easy to add up at the end of a round.

I try to keep it simple on the course but still provide a lot of data.  For example by noting fist putt distance and second putt distance, I can later chart total putts, avg miss distance, avg miss distance from x feet, 3putt %, 3putt% from x feet, proximity to pin of approach shot, and much more.

My scorecard typically has 5 lines, which I mark as follows:

1 - Tee club (i.e., D, 3w, 4i, etc)/fairway (x/check mark)/distance (i usually skip this)

2 - Approach distance/club (i.e. 9i 138)

3 - Shot type/distance from pin (blank if GIR, otherwise something C 20 or P 45)

4 - First putt distance (just a number in feet)

5 - Second putt distance (just a number in feet)

From this information, I could track all of the following:

FIR

GIR

Approach proximity

driving (or other tee shot) distance)

U/D

chip/pitch proximity to hole

putts

putt/GIR

But these can also be broken up into distances.  So I make a chart in google docs that shows from 80-90 yards I hit the green x% of the time and when I do i'm normally x feet from the hole.  And when I have a 20 foot putt I make it 2% of the time, miss by an average of 2 feet, 2 putt 80% of the time, and three putt 17% of the time.

I've yet to make good use of this information.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
