Hi all,

Hope you all had a good weekend! I'm sure most of you were out hitting the course. I certainly was and I must say I think I am finally getting used to my new Covert!

Anyways, the point of this post was to ask for some advice on what to look at for when purchasing a new wedge and basically how the mechanics work behind the wedge. My wedge play of late hasn't been particularly good and I know I can be more consistent with my short game however I just don't feel comfortable. I currently play a Nike VR 56 degree sand wedge with 14 bounce.

When I am within about 80-100 yards to the green I often "try" to hit the sand wedge into the green to try and gain more control however when I hit the ball it seems to go quite high but doesn't get that much distance so I end up short of the green most of the time however I know I can hit a wedge further than I do at the moment!! I understand the basic stance and set up of hitting a wedge however for some reason it doesn't seem to turn out quite right! I know that wedges come in certain lofts and bounces and i am beginning to think that perhaps the sand wedge I have is not quite right for me. I understand the loft part of the wedge however I can't quite get my head around the "bounce" part. I don't have an issue with my pitching wedge however as i seem to get the control & distance I want when I hit it.

Can someone please explain to me in basic terms how the mechanics of the wedge works when it comes to "bounce"? I want to be able to enjoy my wedge play from 80-100 yards and be more consistent however I feel that the current sand wedge for doesn't quite cut it. I mean my pitching and scrambling around the green with this club seems to be okay its just from further out where I feel I am suffering. Perhaps I should look at getting a wedge with a lower loft and lower bounce? Or a wedge with higher loft and lower bounce? Or a wedge with lower loft and higher bounce? I am slightly puzzled at what setup would suit my game.

I really want to focus on improving my short game during the next couple of months and I know that my approach wedge play could really do with improvement and tidying up so i just need some advice.

Looking forward to hearing from as many of you as possible!

Thanks guys!

Obviously technique is an issue for a 23 handicapper but I'd ask what loft your PW is and do you have any wedges with lofts between your PW and SW.

I have PW (44*), GW (50*) then SW (56*). If the gap between your PW and SW is too big get a Gap Wedge and then you can either hit it 3/4 or move your hands down the shaft if you need to take some distance off. That might be better than trying to overhit your SW. I've found it's also better on windy days when you're trying to keep the ball down.

Thanks for that mate. To be honest my technique is not that bad. I used to play a bit when I 14/15 and only really picked it up again a few months (I'm 29 now) so it was just a question of getting back into it but i feel that i am getting better bit by bit! My aim is to get down to a handicap anywhere between 15 and 18. Don't know how possible that is but will certainly give it a go. Got a few lessons with a pro coming up so I am sure he will be able to help me.

I think my PW is currently 48 degree loft and then my SW is set at 56. I am looking into getting myself a 52 / 10 wedge for in between which should help me! Looking for a Nike VR Forged 52 wedge but I am having lots of trouble trying to locate one!

    • My two cents? Don't. As a beginner that's interested in learning about the golf swing, you'll find yourself consuming a lot of information, most of which isn't even relevant to your own swing. You need to learn you can't think your way to a good golf swing. Focus on the one thing that you're working on and doing that on every swing, come what may. And remember, mishits happen.
    • Day 6 (7 May 24) - More work in the backyard focused on tempo in addition to setup.  Worked with 6 and 7 irons hitting hard foam balls - used the old MacGregor irons to mix it up a little.
    • No! lol. But they have to be in the right sequence to play mid-handicap golf or little better. Mostly. And even in that there is range/margin for error in the motions and positions that most normal humans can handle. It helps if you have a decent idea of how a golf club moves around the body like you would any other equipment sports (baseball and hockey might be the closest) After all, fairways are 40 yards wide. Don't overthink it. Be diligent in getting basics right. I will concede that it is harder than it sounds but it certainly is not exact angle/exact position/exact degree of bend/exact speed/exact facial expression, etc, every.... single.... time or the result is horrible death.
    • Looking to play in the Severna Park Golf league and it got rained out the first three weeks. I know the course is being renovated so it is not in great shape but the location is easy for me and I would love to meet some other golfers in my area. Anyone here in Maryland Annapolis area?
    • I like to look at the positives.  Overall you are fairly consistent down the center with most shots 20 yards or less off center.  On most fairways that should be in play.  Sure, you had some very short duds, but also if you look there is a good cluster in the 110-125 yard range.  Sure, we would all like to be longer, but knowing your typical shot is more important than trying to hit the 7-Iron 175 Yards.  Just take more club for longer shots and do not worry about it.  Your distances may increase as you improve over time so do not get caught up on that now.
