I've been Playing Golf for: 2 years

My current handicap index or average score is: 13.5

My typical ball flight is: Mid

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Hook

Videos:

Greets from New Zealand. First post but have been here plenty of times. Was interested in some constructive criticism please :) I started playing about 2 years ago, seriously a year ago & play off a 13.5. My misses tend to be left, sometimes large with the driver! But for a long time they were fades & slicers (they do come back every once & a while!). Any tips would be appreciated, now winters setting in ill have less time on the course & more at the range practicing.

Right elbow is bending too fast and getting way too far behind you in the backswing.

Have a watch of this video:

You're going to want to feel your right bicep pushing against your right pec more and concentrate on keeping that pressure point as you take the club back. You can also try and feel like your right arm stays completely straight throughout the backswing. Of course it can't, but this will help it to flex later rather than sooner. A good drill is to practice swinging the club back to hip high with both left and right arm straight. Let the wrists set then swing through to hip high in the followthrough with both arms staying straight. Let the wrists recock on that side. Once you get the feel of this, you can hit balls to ingrain it. Doing this will help clean up your backswing pieces and help to get your arm swing synced up to your pivot.

You may want to work on making sure you keep your right arm as close your body as possible. This is done very easily. If you place a towel under your right armpit this will help you maintain the arm position through your swing. I can also tell that the reason that you slice or fade is that your hips are very active in your back swing. Try and quiet your lower body and this will help you not get to far in front when you start on the downswing. Hope this helps.

Cheers for the comment. When you say hips are very active are you talking about how far i rotate? Try and keep the shoulder rotation the same and rotate the hips less? I'll try the towel drill today. Cheers

I hope this helps. I was referring to when you rotate your hips it should be mainly on the downswing. From your video it looks like your hips are active on you backswing. I have always been told that you should try and keep your lower half of your body quiet until you start the downswing. It looks like you are rotating your hips too much on the backswing. Try and keep the lower half of your body still until you make your downswing. I hope this helps and I am no teacher but that is just an observation from what I have been told in the past. Cheers

    • Day 87 (27 Jul 25) - Made it an easy session with the wedge this afternoon, worked on staying in the shot and not lifting out - split between low spinners and higher floaters.
    • Shot my new low 72 (par 70) today. Had 5 birdies, also a new best, which included a hole out from the bunker on par 3 6th, and another hole out pitch from 15ish yards on the long par 4, 15th.  Got a couple of other good breaks. Except for an OB drive on 14th (and ensuing double bogey), not much went wrong. All in all I might have used up a year's worth of luck in a single day.
    • Back in the saddle after vacation.  Day 1: played 18. Did not have it, but still battled to an 82. Felt closer to a 90, but that’s fine.
    • Yes, I have seen this from the older crowd that play the 4,700 yard tees and want to know why they get less strokes from there. Always trying to game the system 🤣
    • Day 300 - 2025-07-27 Good 44-ball segment. GSPro was acting goofy, so I just put it on the Quad. Then I hit a bunch of low spinners. Hit 14° down to 9.8° down, with the average closer to 12.3° or so. Focused mostly on the backswing. Right knee good, hands roll up and out a little before laying off (FAR).
