Trouble with my wrist hinge/right elbow tuck on the backswing

So I don't know what it is, but as of late, my swing has completely fallen apart. I'm a fairly new golfer (3rd year) and roughly a 20 handicap. I'm struggling heavily with my back swing. I can feel myself taking the club way too far back and getting completely off plain. I seem to be able to control this on the range, and hit fairly solid shots, but when I'm on the course, I don't know what it is, but I take the club way too far back to the point where I can see the club head on the other side of my head.

I'm pretty certain that my right elbow is completely detaching from my body when I do this, and that's causing the terrible shots (I'm a right handed golfer). I've been focusing on keeping my right elbow tucked in throughout the swing, and although it helps a little, I'm still not hitting consistent, crisp shots.


One thing that has helped me on my downswing, is making sure my right elbow is touching or in front of my right hip which causes me to hit from the inside, and I've definitely seen improvement when I do that. However, now I have so many things in my head regarding my poor backswing, that 75% of my shots are just awful. Poor contact, no distance, no ball flight. Just awful muffs, pulls, hooks, you name it.

Any advice how to stay connect through the entire swing, keeping that right elbow tucked in, not swinging too far back, or anything else you think I should know? Please help!

Think about keeping your elbows close together throughout the swing. Another forum member said it first so I can't take credit, but I can say that it's helped me immensely. That should help your separation problem.

Get a camera and film your swing. Otherwise you are just guessing. Even a phone camera is better than nothing.

When the club is at waste high on my back swing, I feel that is when and where everything falls apart for me. I take the club back with my shoulders, and arms in synch to waste high level, and then I either hinge my wrists way too much which causes the excessive back swing, and the disconnection with my right elbow. I was recently told to simply bend my right arm when the club is at waste high level, and that will keep me connected, but I find that I don't get nearly enough distance when I do that, most likely because there's little to no wrist hinge when I do that.

Bending the right arm is the feeling you want just progressively hinge the wrists. Then keep them supple. Down swing with your hands close to the body. Swing smooth nt hard.

    • You need to stick with one instructor as long as they’re not terrible. There’s no blueprint to improving a golf swing and different instructors may see different things as being more important and try to fix them. The end result is you get a hodge podge of things to work in that may not be cohesive or necessarily help you. If you stick to one instructor and communicate to them as such, they’ll also be able to work out a roadmap to your improvement which is more beneficial in the long run. If a guy assumes you’re just coming in for one lesson you might end up with a band aid.

    • Many thanks.  I read a lot of those posts.   Man, that is really deep.  As an old beginner, during a lesson or on the driving range, I have hit a good shot, you know pretty straight and it goes say 130 yards (7 iron).  The very next swing, I dig a ditch behind the ball.  I know I didn't do the same things on both swings.  Even this last lesson I had, I would hit a pretty good shot, not so on the next shot.  The instructor would quickly point out, "Hey you stayed on your back foot" or "Guess what happened there.  You got all armsy or handsy".  Sort of feels like I need a checklist when I prepare to swing each time.  I can see it now before every swing, "Hey can you guys give me 10 minutes while I run through my checklist".  In all seriousness, I see what you all are saying.  I wouldn't be overthinking it so much if just I could make decent contact most of the time.  Next lesson is about two weeks away.  Can't wait.

    • I was going to link in the same think @snapfade did.  Your swing is already consistent, repeatable, except for nearly "microscopic" differences.  The more mechanically-sound your swing becomes, the smaller and less frequent those "microscopic" deviations become.
