So...I have days where the driver is just more trouble than benefit(I struggle getting the face squared back up)....everyone knows that frustration.  I have a 19° hybrid that I can get out to 220 on average and hit very well.  My dilemma is should I go with a 3w at 15° or get another hybrid(shorter shaft..more control) at 15°?  I'm not so much concerned with extra distance from tight lies or from the rough or fairway but I definitely would like a club for the tee box that I can fall back on.

Probably a silly question but I can't get my mind to lean one way or the other so opinions might help.

My philosophy on golf "We're not doing rocket science, here."

I am looking to redo the top of my bag, 3w to 4 iron.  I have not found a Hybrid I liked until I hit the Titleist 913H, I have had one in my bag as a demo and it has performed well for me.  I am not sure what I want to add, fairway wood and hybrids, strong hybrid (more like 17 degree).

I can hit a 5 wood off the deck and a tee but a 3 wood is too inconsistent to hit off the deck and not significantly more reliable than driver if the driver is off that day.  The courses I play are tight.

My plan is to get get a "long game fitting"  Evaluate 3w to 4 iron.  I am doing this Friday morning.  For the first time I feel a hybrid (Titleist hybrid)  is more consistent than my 3 and 4 iron.  I think I am going to swap them out.  Then I am not sure.  17 degree hybrid and extra wedge or some other combination.  I am hoping the launch monitor and fitter will give me the information to make a good decision.

I would try the clubs you are considering on a monitor so you can keep good gapping.

Good luck.

I'm a glutton for punishment, I love hitting the driver and will do so when ever I can, even on bad days. I think the traditional decision would be to use a 3W.   But if I were in your situation, I would try to get some demo or loaner clubs and hit the 15 degree 3W and Hybrid and see which one is more consistent for you.  There's really no right or wrong answer, just whatever works best for you.

Instead of buying new clubs I would take a lesson on the driver, it's cheaper!

Bag:

DriverG25 or  XCG5 11.5* 3++ fairway wood

3w:  XCG6 15*

*5w: XCG6 18* (out if I bag my 3-iron)

Irons: Rocketbladez tour  3-pw(47*) (I sometimes bag the 3 iron but usually the 5w)

Wedges:   SM-4  52*, 56*, 60*

Putter:  Versa #7 (white on black)

It sounds simple, and maybe not the answer you're looking for, but I agree.  I went thru about 6 to 8 years of trying to find the right equipment.  It doesn't matter if you hit a persimmon wood, or you get every new TMade "R" driver yearly, if you don't have a swing that you can use with all your clubs, then you need some lessons.  Plain and simple

Titleist 910 / 913 FD or Callaway X Hot 3 Deep.  Both are great options to the driver.

    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
