Well i have been out of the game for about 3 years, but have been playing atleast once a week for the past 2 months. really need to upgrade my irons. My current irons were fitted for me in high school, so they are about an inch to short. Definitely need new clubs and i am going to get fitted. I want some that i can grow into. currently about a 20 handicap, but i lay a huge blame on my iron play. use to be about a 5 handicap in high school. But i am leaning towards a game improvement iron. i have hit all these clubs and each has likes a dislikes. i want something forgiving but at the same time i could work later on. Need to keep these clubs for while also, the wife isn't going to let me keep buying clubs. i have already bought a new driver, wedges, and a putter. Probably should have started by buying irons cause the rest fit from before, but back to the point. Forgiving but playable down the road:

Wilson Di7
Cobra FP
Titleist 775.cb
Mizuno MX-19 or 25
Ping G5

I don't like the Taylor Made irons that i hit (R7 and R7draw). i didn't care for the bulkiness of the Callaways (Big Bertha) But the ones listed were the ones i felt the best with. each had like and dislikes. but looking for an outside opinion.

The Taylor Made RAC OS are great. They have light shafts and they are soo forgiving. I love them.

those were the first set i looked at, but they were on closeout. I guess TM is no longer producing this club so they can't be fitted to me through the store i shop at. it is the only store close enough to me with a decent fitter.

I was in much the same situation as you, Beantrac. It was time for upgrading my irons, and eventually I went with the Cobra FPs. It came down to those and the the 06 Big Berthas. In the end I went with the Cobras because I loved the way they looked and played, and agreed with you that the Big Berthas were too bulky. When I am playing well, the Cobras produce more spin to help me stay on a green, and are much more forgiving then my old irons were. I can hit a shot fat or thin and still get a decent result. In the end you have to go with what feels best for you, though.

Fitting can be overrated at alot of times. I mean, just get regular shafts they'll be fine? I don't see what's so hard with that. If your just getting right back into the game a normal "off the shelf" set shouldn't "not" fit you?

i would just rather be fitted. i know i am gonna play these clubs for a while. my last set that i had fitted the lie angle was adjusted -4degrees. don't want that to happen.

I have the MX-23 - I just strted playing this spring and I can hit them well - I struggle with the long irons - but that sems to be a trend with new golfers.... ANyway - they are pretty forgiving and they are forged so you can get fitted anywhere and they can bend them all day long.... you can get them used pretty cheap - i bought mine for 290 at a golf galaxy used.

I suck pretty bad when it comes to my iron game - but these have made a big improvement especially from the 6 iron to the wedge...

From what people tell me these can last with you for a long time way down to the single digit handicaps.... Im wondering if the mx-25 is a big improvement over the 23 - cuz i may be selling these if they are.....

I have been in the same boat that your in. I am currently a Senior in College and picked my game back up after a 4 year hiatus. I was a scratch golfer in high school. I started playing on my old irons and got my swing and technique back. After a while i realized that I could be better if I had irons with out graphite shafts and a huge offset so i did some research and hitting. I ended up getting the mp-60s. Played with them for 6 months and I am very close to were I was when i used to spend 6+ hrs on my game in high school. Good luck with getting back in the game.

My personal preference would be the Titleists... they are clean looking, forgiving enough, and would be a club you could play confidently for a long time.

But that's just me.

Beantrac, if you didn't like the bulkiness of the big bertha's try the X-20's. Long, straight and forgiving will give you confidence at address. I recently bought them, they're awesome definetly hitting more GIR's. You said you were once a 5 handicap. So you obviously know how to hit the ball. Maybe try Mizuno MP 32 or 60, they have a thinner top line but are sweet clubs. If I was single digit handicapper they'd be in my bag.

Well i am going to get fitted and choose my clubs today. definitely gonna try the x-20s and the x-20 tours. they didn't have any of those last time i went. they had the display but no irons. I am pretty excited.

I am in the same position and have focused in on the TM r7's, Callaway X-20's and the Cobra FP's. I know it is all personal preference, but it seems that many people like the x-20's. Can anyone comment on the Cobra's or TM? Thanks!

Well i went Saturday and got fitted, tried just about every club in the store. It was a very hard decision. i had it narrowed down to the Mizuno MX-25, Wilson Di7, and the Callaway X-20.

I ended up getting the Mizunos. the others were great clubs, but hitting the sweet spot on the Mizunos was the greatest feeling ever. Can't wait to get these bad boys. should be coming in middle of next week.

Congratulations on the new purchase. I am planning on a new set within the week as well. When it comes down to it, its all how it feels for you. Now I just need to make the decision on which ones...

    • Day 470 - 2026-01-13 Got some work in while some players were using the sim, so I had to stick around. 🙂 Good thing too, since… I hadn't yet practiced today until about 6:45 tonight. 😛
    • That's not quite the same thing as what some people messaged me today.
    • Day 152 1-12 More reps bowing wrists in downswing. Still pausing at the top. Making sure to get to lead side and getting the ball to go left. Slow progress is better than no progress.
    • Yea, if I were to make a post arguing against the heat map concept, citing some recent robot testing would be my first point. The heat map concept is what I find interesting, more on that below. The robot testing I have looked at, including the one you linked, do discreet point testing then provide that discrete data in various forms. Which as you said is old as the hills, if you know of any other heat map concept type testing, I would be interested in links to that though! No, and I did say in my first post "if this heat map data is valid and reliable" meaning I have my reservations as well. Heck beyond reservations. I have some fairly strong suspicions there are flaws. But all I have are hunches and guesses, if anyone has data to share, I would be interested to see it.  My background is I quit golfing about 9 years ago and have been toying with the idea of returning. So far that has been limited to a dozen range sessions in late Summer through Fall when the range closed. Then primarily hitting foam balls indoors using a swing speed monitor as feedback. Between the range closing and the snow flying I did buy an R10 and hit a few balls into a backyard net. The heat map concept is a graphical representation of efficiency (smash factor) loss mapped onto the face of the club. As I understand it to make the representation agnostic to swing speed or other golfer specific swing characteristics. It is more a graphical tool not a data tool. The areas are labeled numerically in discrete 1% increments while the raw data is changing at ~0.0017%/mm and these changes are represented as subtle changes in color across those discrete areas. The only data we care about in terms of the heat map is the 1.3 to 1.24 SF loss and where was the strike location on the face - 16mm heal and 5mm low. From the video the SF loss is 4.6% looking up 16mm heal and 5mm low on the heat map it is on the edge of where the map changes from 3% loss to 4%. For that data point in the video, 16mm heal, 5mm low, 71.3 mph swing speed (reference was 71.4 mph), the distance loss was 7.2% or 9 yards, 125 reference distance down to 116. However, distance loss is not part of a heat map discussion. Distance loss will be specific to the golfers swing characteristics not the club. What I was trying to convey was that I do not have enough information to determine good or bad. Are the two systems referencing strike location the same? How accurate are the two systems in measuring even if they are referencing from the same location? What variation might have been introduced by the club delivery on the shot I picked vs the reference set of shots? However, based on the data I do have and making some assumptions and guesses the results seem ok, within reason, a good place to start from and possibly refine. I do not see what is wrong with 70mph 7 iron, although that is one of my other areas of questioning. The title of the video has slow swing speed in all caps, and it seems like the videos I watch define 7i slow, medium, and fast as 70, 80, and 90. The whole question of mid iron swing speed and the implications for a players game and equipment choices is of interest to me as (according to my swing speed meter) over my ~decade break I lost 30mph swing speed on mine.
    • Maxfli, Maltby, Golfworks, all under the Dicks/Golf Galaxy umbrella... it's all a bit confounding. Looking at the pictures, they all look very, very similar in their design. I suspect they're the same club, manufactured in the same factory in China, just with different badging.  The whacky pricing structure has soured me, so I'll just cool my heels a bit. The new Mizuno's will be available to test very soon. I'm in no rush.
