What swing speed for X-Stiff?

12 posts in this topic

I was at GG the other day, and the guy actually said I could step up from the stiff flex, to extra-stiff based off of their data. They handed me a funky looking 7 iron with a clipped on thing that measured my average clubhead speed at 91 mph.

No clue what my driver speed is. That was just swinging the one club 4-5 times.

Is there merit to this, or is he just trying to make a sale?

I think he is.  Wait a little bit until you have settled in to your swing changes, because you are probably over swinging a bit right now.

I would agree with Cipher and be hesitant that he's likely trying to make a sale.  For the record, though ... I have an 86-ish mph swing speed with a 6-iron, to go along with a 107-108-ish swing speed with my driver.  And I use (and love) an X stiff shaft for my driver. (Stiff for everything else) So if his 7-iron doohicky is actually accurate, it could be possible that you might like an x stiff driver shaft.  I'd still wait though.

I was recently fit by a certified Ping club fitter.  With the Mizuno shaft optimizer (I believe that is the funky clipped on thing) my swing speed with a 6 iron averaged 91mph.  After many swings I was fit into a new set of G25 irons with the CFS X-stiff shafts.

How ironic...driver shaft snapped at the range today. :-(

Umm ... Fate?? I'd suggest you go somewhere different (if possible) and see if you get the same results for the fitting. That way you'll be 100% you have the right equipment for you.

Yeah, I just don't know of anyone else in the area. :/

Either way, I'm out a driver for a while. My game is probably better off without it, so I may just hold off on a new shaft for the time being so I can avoid temptation and horrible scores from OB shots.

I just don't know how it snapped...it's like a month old. :/

Hey, I'm just telling you what the little doo-dad on their club said.

I was swinging great that day...simulator had my 5 iron at 215 yards, and the tape showed 6 hits in a row on the sweet spot. Can I do that in a round? Nope...more like hit fat and off the toe about 72 yards to the right.

That there son, is called range golf. You always hit the ball perfect on the range, get out to the course, and chunks, slices. Crazy game.

Yeah, I knew something was off...driver sounded weird and hit even worse. There's a 240 yard flag out that and I hit a good swing, and it was probably 20 yards short of that pin...I was thinking "WTF is happening right now?" Next swing, bye bye driver head. lol

Thanks you just made me spit up my drink all over the computer screen. LOL

My driver did the same thing, but I was playing at a course, that was next to a road. The damn driver head ended up on the road. I barely found it, no one saw it fly away.

    • These aren't perfectly round, but they don't have the "flat spot" that most jumbo grips do: http://palmbirdputtergrips.com/
    • This is a public course that the pond in which all of our water is stored before it is pumped out and used to water the grass on the course currently has severe algae issues.  We currently had a company inspect the pond and clean out 10-12 ft diameter around the intake of the pump to the sprinkler system due to how much algae we were blowing through the sprinkler heads. With this we found that there is 5ft of algae throughout the pond in which the pond is 12-13ft deep across it so this should tell you how bad the problem is. We had a green-keeper that did not treat the pond for the last 6 months in which he is now gone. The current green-keeper is feeding what he calls "spikes" on a monthly basis as well as a bio pump. I would like to know if we can keep bermuda and bent grasses that we have on our course alive if we can SLUG feed CHLORINE tablets to the pond on a weekly basis. If so how do we go about doing this and what chlorine residual do we need to be aware of that will start to kill the grass??? He gave us a 5 year clean-up on the current treatment program and said there is nothing else that can be done....!!!   THANKS FOR ANY HELP INPUT ON THIS ISSUE
    • When I have a bad day on the range, I've now found the best thing to do is stop swinging.  I think there is a natural tendency to go the other way and swing, curse, tee it up again, swing, curse, tee it up again, and repeat.   Instead, I'll walk away for a moment, take a drink of something cold, and then get to back to basics. I don't just start swinging full again.  I go slow.  Like, really, really slow.  Maybe for about 10 minutes, go over each part of the swing in super slow mo.  Then, once I feel like all the parts are where they should be, I'll hit a ball in super slow mo.  The first time i did this, I was shocked at how far I hit it swinging that slowly.   Then, I'll slowly take swings getting a little faster each time until I feel my mechanics get out of whack again.  Then, I treat that as my new swing speed and resume my "range session". But I don't swing in rapid fire.  I'll walk around the mat after each shot and address each new ball as if I were walking up to address it on the golf course.  I feel like this process really ingrained my proper swing into muscle memory and is most responsible for the improvement in my swing over the last several weeks. And now I realize, if you go to the range the way I used to, and just hit 100 balls in 40 minutes and go home, I'm not really trying to get better.  Instead, that's just hoping to get better.
    • I'm not sure what is my favorite part.  How consistently he hits the same spot on the turf?  The Carhartt jacket and slippers?  The way the video starts with him carefully examining the sole of the club? I want so badly to believe that this isn't faked, but my guess is that this is viral marketing for Bud Light (I'm only half joking).
    • Im not a swing expert by any means, just coming in to say I like yours.
