Hey guys, So I've been struggling with my driver for quite some time. I feel as if the shaft is too long. Now I'm thinking of having my shaft cut. I'm 5ft5" and the distance from my wrists to the ground is 32". I'm wondering what the proper length should be for my driver

First of all, wrist-to-ground measurement is only a rough starting point of determining lie angle and shaft length.

You would need to get on a launch monitor and see the flight pattern and measurement data on your drives.

You mention that you stand 5-foot-5. This may sound odd, but some shorter golfers do well with longer than average shafts, at least on their irons. There's a balance between arm length and shaft length. A good fitter can help you decide what driver specs you need.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Having a shorter shaft on your driver will give you a lot more control. You may lose some distance but if you are landing on the fairway more often, the question is, 20 yards back or 10 yards in the rough. Remember, the old length for a driver used to be 43 inches. Theses days everything is going longer due to weight. Cut it down, if it feels a little light load it with lead tape. Your pro can always extend it again if you want to lenghten it.

I just got and RBZ driver and was thinking of cutting it down half an inch. Not sure if it will change the swing weight of the club or not. I will be adding a new grip VDR with 2 wraps. Will that even it out?

I recently cut my driver down to 44.5" from 45". I noticed a slight change in swing weight, however I also upped the grip from STD to Mid-Size with 2 additional wraps.

I am hitting the center of the face much more consistently, though I typically never had an issue with square contact as it is.

I have also not seen any noticeable distance loss at this time either.

My driver is 44.25 and I wish I would have taken it down to 43.5. I had a club maker shorten mine, he added 12 grams to the tip and the shaft plays a little softer as a result. I haven't noticed a loss of distance but I have noticed more FIR. Here just about every course I play has an abundance of short par 4's so I use my 4w quite a bit. But it's nice to be confident with the driver.

Dave :-)

    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
