It seems crazy, but it is already time for club championship talk to begin.

1. Have you already had your club championship, is yes, how'd you do?
2. a) If you have one coming up let's hear about it, what type of things are you hoping to accomplish this time around?
2. b) How has your game been lately, ready for the championship?
3. Just for club comparison post last year's winning score (or this year if it has already past).

Mine is this weekend, 36 holes, 18 on Saturday 18 on Sunday.

This year I'm looking to finish in the top 10 of the championship flight which will qualify me for the team's city squad to be played later in August. Winning would be great, but if I think realistically and play within my ability I can pull top 10. I have been playing a bit better as of late and would be happy with this result.

The winning score of our club championship last year was -3. The guy shot a -3 68 on Saturday and even par 71 on Sunday. Him and another guy were a couple ahead, 10th place was +16 for the two days. That guy turned in consecutive 79's. Our club is on the newer side, we have a couple really good players and a lot of mediocre players, typically against other clubs in the city, as a group we're behind but catching up each year as we get more members.

Let's hear about your Club Championship, and GOOD LUCK!

Indeed. Many clubs have already had their club championship. I missed the one at Lake View but am going to play in the one at Whispering Woods in late August.

a) If you have one coming up let's hear about it, what type of things are you hoping to accomplish this time around?

I just want to play solidly. I'm in the championship flight but I'd have to play out of my mind to win, so all I can ask is that I play as good as I can that day and give every shot all of my attention.

b) How has your game been lately, ready for the championship?

I had the Erie Mid-Am recently and played well. Game has been improving to all-time "best" heights this year.

I don't belong to a club, but we are into the final 1/3 of our league season. Unlike last year, when my wife and I had it locked up with 4 weeks to go, this year we are back in first but only by 6 points. There are a total of 6 available each week and we were as low as 4th in mid July after losing matches 3 weeks in a row. There are only 14 points between 1st and 7th right now. We have 5 weeks to play and the 2nd place team gets a bye this week so they pick up 6 points automatically while we are playing the 3rd place team. That could be the swing night. If we can get through it with our lead intact, it would put us 14 points ahead of 3rd and still 6 ahead of second with our remaining rounds against the lower half of the teams in the standings and one round against the second place team. One thing we do have going for us is we played ahead for next week and my wife shot her second best round ever and 3 shots better than her best for the year. I shot my second best round of the year. Our opponents will have to go pretty low to beat us that night.

Our Senior/Master Senior championship is this weekend, and the full Club Championship starts 2 weeks from Friday. I'll be playing in both... how I'll do is anyone's guess.

My Junior Club champ is August 4th,5th and 6th. I didnt play last year because its unbeleivable how many kids cheat. The year before last i posted a 92,95 and i came in the second flight. My goal this year is to come in the 1st flight and just post some good scores. I just get really angry with all the kids cheating and so it really isnt worth it. All the egos and stuff its horrible. The winning scores are around a 75,76 but i have only shot a personal best 77 this year so it should be close. Going into this im not playing too good, my irons need some work. So I have to get in gear if i want to compete.

Good luck Dent, you're right about cheating and that just sucks. Those kids need to learn that it is supposed to be a gentleman's game and that cheating sucks.

I play in quite a few four man scrambles with my friends and almost everytime we end up suspecting teams of cheating. Four guys, out in a group by themselves, most of them drinking, yep it happens a lot. It does make me feel better when we win or when other people comment that we must have cheated, not a chance, it just means we played great that day. I know it and my team knows it, I guess that is what matters.

If you have a group of 4 playing in an individual stroke play tournament, how do they cheat? It's kind of up to the rest of the foursome to police each other. It's not right that you should have to, but I can assure you that if I thought someone in my foursome was going to do something underhanded, I'd be watching like a hawk.

I have often stopped someone who was about to make a mistake due to ignorance of the rules by just watching them whenever they are in such a situation. If I thought someone would do it intentionally I'd either call them on it right there, or I'd report them to the committee as soon as it was feasible. I realize that you can't do anything about anyone outside of your group, but I would still do what I could. Then I'd get the heck out of that club as soon as I possibly could, because if they are raising kids with such poor ethics, I don't even want to be round them now or when they reach maturity. The kids who play in the junior leagues at the public course I call home are taught the rules, including ethics, and any who I've played with all seem to take it to heart.

It may not be in the group I am playing in, but some of my friends are in other groups and have watched kids cheat right then and there. They usually do say something, but they dont report it to the pro. I know for a fact 3 kids I know are going to cheat, but hey, if they want to win the or get good in the club champ by cheating, they are only cheating themselves right?

Mine is this weekend. First one i've played in a few years due to college. I played the summer after i graduated HS and I got 1st place in the 2nd flight (can't remember my scores).

I'm hoping to get into the first flight and play solidly. Recently i've been playing horribly...until Sunday I shot a 39,41. So i'm hoping I can continue my play from Sunday.

Hell I just hope it doesn't rain...if it doesn't rain that'll be a success no matter what. I haven't played in a single scramble, tournament, or anything this year that it hasnt' rained at least once.

1 - Yes. It was at the end of June. I posted really embarassing scores - 94 and 97. Only the second day counted (first day was qualifying), but I went 41-56.

2 - Next year I'm hoping to at least place in the first flight if not the championship flight. If I get into the latter I'm not looking to win, but at least post a socially acceptable score. 2b - Right now I pull about 85-ish for 18 holes. That's good for the second flight, but not the first. I'm hoping on getting a bit better by then. 3 - 138 - 67, 69. I think.

No, I think they are cheating all the rest of the field. If they cheat during casual rounds, or for handicap posting then they are cheating themselves. When they cheat to finish high in a tournament, then they are cheating everyone else out of what is their due reward. I would absolutely report them... and it wouldn't matter whether I was finishing in the money or not because of their cheating, all that matters here is the principle.

Our Club Championship is August 9-12. Thursday we play a normal round and that is used as a qualifying round. From there, everyone is seeded 2-32 (last year's champ gets the #1 seed) and for those who dont qualify they are put into the 1st flight and have their own tournament. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are match play.

I am hoping to win my 2nd Club Championship in 3 years. The competition is steep, but in match play anything can happen.

Ya your right, i hope i get grouped with some cheaters so i can catch them, it will be unfortunate that I dont. But usually i have a friend in a group of cheaters so i tell him "Hey that guy cheats, so watch out for him" and usually it turns out that he gets reported, but Im going to definatly report some guys.

i didn't qualify for matchplay. Shot 83-73. Was 8over after 6 holes on the first day and that was pretty much it. Was only the 2nd competitive round i played with my new driver and had trouble controlling it. Am really focused on playing well at USGA mid-amateur qualifying.

Mine is match play. The first two rounds were last weekend. The final two are coming this weekend. I won my matches (both 4 and 2) and I'm still in it.

My game has been a little weak of late, with some loss of driver control. I got it back last week and my matches were tough, but in time I just kind of wore my opponents down. In both matches, I was even on the back when they ended.

I approach these as just a golf game on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Because of this, I haven't gotten nervous. I usually make the finals or win. This is a new club this year and I expect the same results- heck I'm in the semis already!

We had our club championship this past weekend. My goal was to finish 3rd, we have 2 all conference college golfers in our club and I didnt realistically think I could beat them. I finished 5th 2 strokes out of 3rd. Stupid putter.

Well finished up yesterday, did better than I had thought. We had a small showing though, only about 25-30 players actually showed up. I shot 80,78 to win the 1st flight by 1 stroke. Championship flight (NOBODY played good in championship flight by their standards) won with a 79,75! Our club champion many times shot even 72 first day...and an 87 the next!!! Talk about shock all over the course!

My club championship is this coming weekend. It is on Saturday and Sunday. This will be my first real tournament. I am actually pretty confident that I can finish pretty high if I catch a break in how I am flighted. I should know my flight in a couple of days.

The biggest problem will be my lack of playing golf. By tournament time, I will not have played golf in close to 3 weeks. The wife had a baby a week ago so my time has been consumed with that.

I plan on getting out and hitting a bucket of balls a day between Wednesday and Saturday.

    • I mean, a golfer is trespassing and damaging property. So, golf rules don’t supersede state laws. 😉 Like, if it isn’t marked and is off golf property. The right thing to do is take an unplayable lie or take stroke and distance.  Also, this is a liability for the course. The homeowner could easily say the course is liable for damage done because they knowingly didn't mark their boundaries which allowed golfers to trespass and damage property.
    • Interestingly enough, if the course (the Committee in Rules terms) doesn't mark the boundaries, there is nothing out of bounds.  I realize that neighboring homeowners would take a dim view of golfers whacking balls from their backyards, but that's what the Definition of Out of Bounds requires. "All areas outside the boundary edge of the course as defined by the Committee."
    • I had two events the past two days. Yesterday I was playing a course blind. Hit it solid. Hit 9/14 fairways, 12/18 greens, 34 putts. Many of those putts were the result of balls that were close-ish to the hole when they landed, but wound up a long way away once they'd finished rolling (backwards mainly). Then today, hit 11/13 fairways, 11/18 greens, 37 putts, and shot 80. 8 over par and it wasn't particularly pretty. My big problem today was my pitching. I was inside 100 yards of the hole and off the green on 9 occasions.  1st - drive to about 75 yards, fanned a 58 degree short and right. On the green, but a good 40 feet away and good two putt from there (so took 3) 2nd - laid up to a bunker and it's narrow past it, so had 165 in, missed it right with an 8 iron. Wet rough, chip from about 5 yards off the green and the club snagged. It got on the green, but only temporarily. Overcorrected a bit on the next one and hit it a bit firm and it rolled out to about 35 feet. Putt didn't break and it ran on a bit and I missed the one back (greens were fast and a little bumpy, which didn't help, but doesn't excuse either). (took 5 to get down from close to the green) 4th - had about 95 from the right rough, hit it on the green and two putts (3) 5th - 90 from the fairway, tugged it and it got a firm bounce, chipped on and hit what I thought was a decent chip, but it ran out down the hill and two putts from 20 feet (4) 7th - 65 from the fairway, significant upslope and hit it a bit hard, ran long left against the collar. Tried to blade a PW, but it got under a bit so didn't advance it anything like far enough. Made a good two putt from there (4) 11th - 63 from the fairway, hit a squirrelly pitch on the green and two putts (3) 12th - 75 from the semi-rough, caught it a bit clean and it wound up on the back edge. Putting down a tier and it ran 8 feet past (that was actually a really good putt and couldn't have done any better I don't think) and missed that (4) 13th - 55 from the fairway, overcorrected and hit the big ball before the small ball. Then made a stellar up and down from 25 yards short to an elevated green with a putter (3) 15th - down in three from a greenside bunker (3) That was it. The other 9 holes I hit it on the green from outside 100 yards. So on those 9 occasions, I took 32 shots to get in the hole. 3.56 average. Terrible. Reason I'm posting this in here is to see if anyone has any suggestions for how to work on my contact with pitch shots. I don't have access to a grass range. Only mats and it's easy off a mat. Partly I think my problem is I've hit it off mats so much this winter that I've lost my judgement on where the ball is versus the ground because of the leeway granted. Open to ideas. I also suspect that under pressure I stand a bit closer to it and then get steep and hit down on it and it puts me in a bad place, but I can't seem to get myself to not do that.
