Arg!

Here's what works for me: In match play, I play my game and pay very little attention to anyone else. I never play my opponent. I try to make them play me! How? I resolve to play smart and just hit fairways and greens. I remind myself that for tucked pins, to play to the middle of the green. I have found that a steady diet of pars, with a few birdies thrown in just wears opponents out in match play. In my club championship this year, every match but one was within one hole halfway through. Every match, my opponent made a few mistakes once they realized they had to birdie to win or even tie a hole. They just wore out. Medal play, I don't TRY to play great, even if I believe I need to go low. I trust that if I just keep hitting fairways and greens, putts will drop. It's amazing how just sticking to the plan, hitting fairways and then hitting greens often works out. I don't try hero shots. If I mess up a shot, I work to minimize the damage by taking double bogey or worse out of play. How? I accept that I'll make bogey unless I try some low probability shot. I also know that a putt can drop and par will be saved. Nerves- it took me a long time to manage nerves. I still get nervous early in the round, usually around the 3rd to 5th hole. When this happens, I tell myself this is great. My nerves are just the excitement of a chance to excel and I'm glad they are there. After about one hole, they then usually disappear.

Won my club championship today. The course played very difficult for the two days. I shot 72-70 (-2) and won by 7 strokes. They tucked the pins and played it from all the way back on a very wet course. (Absolutely no roll at all) I am very happy with the way I played. I shot 32 (-4) on the front side today but the wind blew about 30 MPH on the back so I struggled a bit coming in.
