Hi Everyone!

I first picked up my first golf club when i was 7 and only played for a week in a jr camp... now i want to get back into it and dont know where to start... is there a place where i can learn terminology as well. Should i hit the driving range first? or maybe some putting? thanks!

If you want to play golf, give yourself a break and find a pro to get lessons from NOW, not after you have practiced bad habits for months! Depending on where you live you may or may not have a lot of options when it comes to teaching pros, but I would suggest being completely honest about where your game is and looking for someone that you like. I know lessons can be expensive, but it is a good investment since it can get you playing better faster, and thus having more fun.

  • 2 weeks later...

I agree my wife wants to learn to play. She said we can get out on the weekends together. My game is atrocious but I like to play. Going back for more lessons. BAD HABITS ARE HARD TO BREAK....LOL

I just started this Spring.  My wife and I did the "Get Golf Ready" at a local course.  PGA pro went through all aspects of the game and it is cheap and great way to get started.

If I had it to do over again - I'd spend a lot more time on the range / chipping green and at Par 3 / Executive courses. This costs a lot less and might take away some of the early frustrations of how many strokes it takes to get to the green on a 400 yd par 4. I remember how brutally often it took me 6 stroke to get on. And balls in the woods, etc. I believe a nice open par 3 course is where beginners should camp out for a while. I still like them.

Yep. It's just like driving, haha. Take your test (or get a coach) before you've developed too many bad habits.

Good luck! Get a coach or team up with someone who has been playing for a long time. Most courses have decent pros to show you the ropes.

The best way is to just start playing. Preferably at a nice course on a Saturday morning from the tips. Good luck!

Hey i am new to golf to only started 2months ago. I got my handicap yesterday and it 25. What I did was hit the rang see how your hitting the ball. I was slicing everything so I got a lesson. When u no you can hit them ok start doing a couple of holes. I was doing 4 holes at 6/7pm as there was no one around and I wasn't getting rushed. Hit the golf ball at the rang and on the course are to different things.

No kidding about the difference between the course and the range. I started golf this year at 56, and have started to see steady improvement on the range, but it has yet to show up on the course. On the range my distance and accuracy of drives has been steadily improving. Drives on the range that this spring would have made me happy now feel like mishits and I now carry this little hill out there that I used to be happy just to roll one onto, but last weekend on the course it was topped ball after topped ball. I got one good drive in in nine holes , obviously I was trying too hard even though I was telling myself less is more and easy does it before every swing. I need to tame my inner gorilla. I think I will stick to the range and par three until I get my fairway woods hitting consistently well at the range then I will work on the mental aspect, which can only be fixed at the course, I think.

Don't worry about the comedians in this thread. They think they are feeling funny, but it is possible to shank a joke too.

    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.
