After hitting balls last night I suddenly realize what's plagued me for nearly 45+ years. When at address, I my arms hang down and that creates an angle with the shaft. For some idiotic reason, as I come into impact, I'm straightening my arms out with the shaft making my arms and club longer than the distance between me and the ball. When I remember, sometimes I'll keep my right elbow against my side forcing it into position but making for a really short backswing.

There has to be  a drill or something to help me remember beside tying some elastic between my belt and golf grip! Thanks.

Put a tee in the arm pit of your trail arm.  If the trail arm straightens too soon, the tee will pop out.

Also the elbow doesn't have to be against your side, this is mostly in regards to the backswing, where people think they have to keep the entire tricep attached to the body.  Even with the tee in the arm pit there should be some space between the elbow and the rib cage at the top of the backswing, about 4-5 inches.  This may be why you backswing gets so short when you work on the elbow. Good video on that

I'll be damn! The one part about keeping the same arm contact on the backswing as the address position could possibly save my golf game. It's the same as the golf tee but the light went on this time. I just went out in the back yard and swung a 5 wood and in order to get the club up on plane with a flat wrist and maintain a sort of closed armpit as in the address position, I had to rotate my shoulders a bit more - well duh!

Thank you very much, I have to go to the practice range now.
