Just had my first lesson and was told don't try and hit it straight I need a shape. I naturally hit a fade with what I was told was a low ball flight. So my pro told me I would be better hitting a draw because its more powerful and il get a higher ball flight. And it got me thinking what shape all of you play if a shape at all? Also what's the advantage of a higher ball flight?

I usually am trying to just hit it straight. When I don't, my ball flight is a hook or a fade/slice. It's been the fade/slice combo more recently. :( As for the high ball flight, the ball will carry farther but may not roll out much if it's too high. Also, a high ball can get pushed around if it's windy enough, so that can make things tricky.

I think most instructors will try to get you into hitting draws. At least for me when I got lessons and went from hitting a slice/fade to hitting a draw, the draw seems to be a more powerful shot that roll further. Just my experience. Now if I hit my ball straight with a driver I consider it a mishit. I don't mind hitting straight with my irons.

That was his point I think that none of the pros try to hit it straight coz a miss hit can go either way where as if your trying to hit a shape it should at worse go straight.

And has this improved your game?

I aim for a slight fade but that's mostly with my driver, woods and rescue whereas I hit my irons fairly straight.

My current coach has me eliminating all shape. He is helping me achieve a nice straight flight. What I found is that is easier to hit a fade because it is created by a slight natural outside in swing.

Driver is between draw and hook

Everything else is draw or straight pull.

might hit 10 left to right shots all year and they are on accident. My first two years I was a slicer, once I got rid of that I dramatically improved.

My good shots are always a draw between 5 and 10 yd. My bad shots are either a block/push or hook.
