I agree, it can't be both ways.  Either Majors count more than regular wins or they don't.  I'd say Phil's Open win plus two other wins and 2nd at US Open, places him ahead of Tiger.

If Phil gets it it will clearly be more of a lifetime achievement kind of thing rather than anyone thinking he was really the best player this year.  And in his heart Phil would know that and it would make it a pretty sour triumph for him. IMO.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

I am probably just ignorant but is there some written criteria for POY.  I thought it was just how the players vote their opinion of who had the "best year", but there isn't a specific definition of what is a "best year".  Is that correct or am I ignorant?

The PGA of America has an objective points criteria with Tiger having clinched that already.  I think Turtleback or someone else described it above.

The PGA Tour lets the players vote which makes it more subjective, but typically they vote the same winner as the PGA of America.

I think Phil must really be relieved that Tiger got it, because it spares him a year's worth of being asked whether he thought he really deserved it.

    • Day 55: 2026.03.04 Backswing work, trying to pull everything together, slowly at first.
    • Day 519 - 2026-03-04 Got some work in before lessons. Mostly downswing. My backswing is good.
    • Yeah I’ve tried it but I don’t feel very comfortable doing it like that. Isn’t there like a website where I can do it so it’s safer?? I got scammed one time on FBM so I don’t trust it.
    • Day 200 3-4 Wider back swing, arms up a bit higher, and added in some flow work to start getting a since of a full swing. Still focusing on arching wrist through downswing.
    • It's going to be very difficult for the 2026 Masters to match the 2025 edition for storyline. I honestly don't know that anyone else in the field could match the story of Rory finally winning after so many years and the blow ups over the years, not to mention the career slam being completed. No one this year that I can think of is remotely close to that kind of story. Combine that with the attempts at blow ups last year (Double on the 1st, 13, 18 on first try) and the stunningly good shots that he hit in the final round (7, 15, 17, 18 on second try).  Full gamut: https://www.masters.com/en_US/watch/2025-04-13/17445961638226475/every_single_shot_from_rory_mcilroys_final_round.html
