Intercostal muscle

As this is a golfing forum am sure this would have popped up before, but last weekends golf had led me to tear my intercostal muscle just below my right pec. Hurts like a mofo, hurts to take deep breaths, get up out of bed, twist and cough etc. 1) what should I do to heal this? I'm 30 and I've never torn a muscle before, always been ok on tht front. 2) how can I prevent it happening again? Apart from warming up, what weight/resistance training can I do to build it up? 3) anything else that can help??? TIA :-)

I had the same Injury only mine was located at my rib by my back around the shoulder so for the longest time I thought it was my shoulder. Anyways I played with it for a while and worked my swing around it until it got really bad. Finally I decided to take a break from anything golf related for 1 1/2 months and then I was good. It sucked not playing and when I started playing again I played awful I mean awful because I now had full range mobility with my swing so it was almost like it started for scratch but a coyple of Weeks later I was playing better and hitting the ball alot further because I could take a full swing. Good luck

Also... I am 34 and I attribute the injury to poor swing habits and learned my lesson the hard way. Anyways all is good again.

I wanna share my information about sports it would be require you to exert more pressure on your chest or ask you to dramatically move your abdomen though it would be increase your risk of having  strained intercontinental muscles.Also trying Focus on your muscle pain treatment is very much important.

Rib muscles often get irritated from forcing a turn when you're out of balance.  Most common would be really going hard at the ball from the top of the swing.  That's especially an issue if you're "stuck" or your arms get wrapped around your chest.

also, folks that have poor ribcage (thoracic) mobility will be more likely to have issues here.

Without seeing you in person my best guess is tempo and balance.  If your weight gets outside the foot arches then the spinal muscles will be on fire trying to keep you upright and swinging the club - self preservation, right?  If you really drive hard when the ribcage is fully turned (muscles are on stretch and weaker) then it's a recipe for trouble...for the ribs and for the results.

Of course stretch out before a round. A good stretch will not necessarily hurt but it should make you actually break a small sweat. For the intercostal spaces I would recommend this although it is primarily for the chest...stand in a doorway and place your hand on the casing so that your elbow is parallel with the floor. Bend slightly and step forward with one foot ( you will know the one depending on which side you are doing) . Lean into it so you feel the chest stretch. Next raise the hand up the wall and repeat to get the stretch higher up the chest. Repeat each side at least three times at both levels. I promise this will help. And don't try to knock the ball out of the park. After this stretching routine you will increase your distance naturally with a smooth and easy swing.

That would really depend on where the intercostal is irritated.  The doorway stretch could do nothing or actually make it worse.  there's no way to know for sure, gotta go case by case.
