Texas has a lot of great courses. It's got inexpensive equipment, is often free to play, and takes an hour or two. Plus you get better quickly and putting is relatively easy. :-)

Start with:

- Any putter you like the feel and look of (you can throw them off the tee pads too)

- A Discraft Buzzz, an MVP Axis, or an Innova Roc for your mid-range duties

- A "fairway driver" that's slightly "understable" (there are quite a few of them)

Really you can start with the first two and then go from there.

Great activity to do with your kids, too. My wife and daughter love to play. Great way to get outside and walk around while doing something relatively easy on the body but still "competitive."
