Progressive Set... Titleist & Mizuno

Well I really don't have a good reason for switching, other than my current set is just beat up and worn out. Frankly last year was the best iron play I've had in my career. That's why I'm wondering if I'm crazy for wanting to switch now, but I keep telling myself that it was my swing and hours of practice that yielded the good results, not the irons. Accompany a great year last year with a $1,000+ price tag and then I really begin to wonder what I'm thinking, but I've made up my mind that I'm treating myself to new irons this year so damnit, I'm doing it!

I have the MP-64's and they're worth every penny. Mizuno is notorious for producing irons that can last forever, and you never feel the need to change them. I think I'll be playing the 64's 10+ years from now. Also, leaving out the 3 iron (I use a 3-Hybrid instead) saves you over $100 on the set.

Maddog - I'm interested in how this played out.  Did you pick up the 64s?  How 'bout the long irons?

I'm eyeing a replacement for my MP-58s and the 64s are at the top of the list.

You just have to hit the sets and find out how the lower clubs work.

In last year's demo days, I tried out a set of Cleveland 588 TT (Tour Trajectory) irons. I hit the mainly to see what a KBS C-Taper Light shafts felt like (R-flex, 105 grams). As by my HDCP rating, this should have been more club than I could handle.

But to my surprise, the irons felt very smooth and lively when I hit them. The 4i felt as smooth as a 7i does in most other sets, and I got good launch with it.

So, you just have to try them and see what happens.

And, some better players are going the other way. A 7-HDCPer at our club recently dropped his 4i, and now  goes with 3W, 2H and 4H at the long end.
