I have not gotten fitted for two reasons. 1) I am a broke college student and this whole new irons thing is probably just dreaming. At least until next year when maybe I can gather some gift cards. So I am basically just looking for suggestions of clubs to watch out for. 2) Since I obviously hit better or worse on different days with different clubs I don't want to get fit for the "right club of the day" if you know what I mean.

Good thing is, if you were to go to a good fitter, they will work with your swing.  Your swing path may change a little etc, but your swing speed will be fairly consistent.  A good fitter will be able to pull a great idea of your true swing on any day.  As long as your not crazy inconsistent with your swing, you will be fine.  You don't have to go in hitting the ball perfect... in fact, you may want some of your regular misses in there.  Thing is, you have to know what your doing with the ball on average... How high do you hit the ball with current clubs? Do you miss left or right?  Draw or Fade?  Fat or Thin?  Toe or Heel? etc?

Always watch for deals on fittings!  They practically give them away in hopes of you buying clubs.  Many shops will include the price of your fitting towards the clubs also.  If you know your swing speed, spin rates etc. you can give a good fitter an idea of what you would need.

People who miss off the toe are usually swinging to the left. You don't need to change your address position, typically - your path typically needs to be adjusted.

As I was hitting toward the toe a lot, I also thought it was "set up" related, However, tonight at the range, I went with the purpose of trying what Erik eluded to saying it was a swing fault, being swinging to the left, which to me is over the top. So, I made several practice swings, by slightly flatting my swing and concentrated on swinging out to the right. Took me a couple of tries, but I checked my club/clubs and guess what, my strikes were back in the center of my clubs..YAY, and thanks Erik.

So for the rest of the night which I hit 130 balls, only a few went toward the toe, so I have that to work on. Oh, and my shots with all my clubs are much straighter, just slight draws now...Yep, I'm a happy camper..

Glad that helped!  I used to be the opposite.  I had a flatter inside out swing for years and played a draw.  If I aligned the ball in the middle of the club face I was heeling everything.  So rather than fix the issue, I moved the ball to the toe at address and hit the center of the club face and played my draw.  After a few years off, I came back to the game and continued to line up on the toe.  Unfortunately, I no longer have the same swing so and I hit the ball right where I lined it up.  I've used some impact tape and figured that as long as I address the ball in the middle of the club face, I hit the middle of the club face...  Tough habits are hard to break, I'm still getting used to the different look at address - It works, but like any change, it doesn't feel right yet.    (P.S. if I'm honest with myself, I do have a tendency to come over the top on occasion, so my miss would be further out on the toe- opposite of how I used to miss- I'm almost learning my game all over).  Thanks Erik!

    • I have that club and absolutely love it!
    • Have a 19° (moved to 20.5°) Titleist 915H. I just love the club. Beautiful feel off the sweetspot, high launch, soft landing. Versatile. In the future, with less overall speed I will replace my 4 and 5 irons with another hybrid, something around 26°.
    • Broke the head of a Stealth Plus on a warm up. TaylorMade send me a new head but I decided to upgrade it to the new IQ10 LS and pay the difference. While I was waiting for the 8° head to arrive at the store I messed around with all the multi brand putts they had available. I instantly liked a black TaylorMade Spider, not the new one but very similar. The weight felt perfect. Big line in the middle for easy alignment. I was playing and old Zebra so the change in technology and feel was huge. Fast review of both clubs.. Driver QI10 LS. I always hit to ball up in the sky. I was playing the stealth at 7° with a 60g X low flight shaft and I was still hitting it pretty high. With the QI10 playing it at 6° now is almost hard for me to hit it high, with the same shaft the ball comes out lower and with less spin. so I'm really happy with the change. Putter Spider. I love it. It took me an afternoon to figure out how to grip it (it comes with a superStroke grip) but after that it all came into place. More stable on short putts and a good weight to swing smoothly on long putts and with added forgiveness over my old zebra.
    • I have a 2h but we don’t get along anymore. It’s a bit of an abusive relationship - she gives me just enough hope once in a while that things are going to be better and then it’s back to the same old shit. I went to a PING fitting recently with the intention to replace the hybrid with a 5w or something, thinking maybe I’ll be better with a fairway wood than a hybrid. But it turns out the best club I hit that fits in that slot in the bag is another hybrid so I ordered it.
