Does anyone else change their grip as they move towards long irons? I notice I feel more comfortable and hit the ball better when I use a stronger left hand grip as I move towards a longer iron. I don't know if this has to do with offset (my clubs do have some) but the backswing feels more natural as well as impact.

I'm no expert (see my handicap). But this seems crazy to me. I have never read nor heard of anyone doing this, let alone recommending it. Your grip is your grip, and IMO it should be the same for every club. (At least for a normal, full swing shot.)

As long as you are moving the ball more forward in your stance for your longer irons, this makes sense. It should help keep your clubface square and keep your hands in front of the ball when making contact. Think about it, if you used the same grip on a 9i as on a 3i, but you moved the fall several inches forward, by the time you clubface arrived at impact position, it would already be closed.

Nope. I believe you should have a neutral grip for all clubs. A strong grip promotes a slice.

I think a strong grip promotes a hook or a draw or simply the closing of the clubface.

Lots of pro golfers that fade the ball have a strong grip, but they turn hard through the ball and work hard to hold off the release of the club. But in most amateurs, a strong grip helps to get the clubface back closed. So, a typo, or something else Leek?

Thanks for your input. I will ask my teaching pro, although he will probably scoff at the question, like he does for most that I ask. Man, I need to find a better mentor.

No, you shouldn't change your grip for any club. The only thing that should stand is where the club is relative to your stance....

Personally, my grips don't have the little thumb marks to recommend where to put your hands, but I always line my left thumb where the shaft meets the club face (if that makes sense).

With longer clubs I put my left hand further and further to the left. I have a tendency to snap the clubface shut at impact, causing an ugly duck-hook. Putting my hand to the left usually compensates.

left thumb straight down is quite a weak grip, no?

I recommend not changing your grip (unless opening or closing down face), as your swing will be different as you will be inconsistent...

I think I subconsciously take a little stronger grip with driver and 3 wood than I do with say a PW or SW. I'm not looking to hit a draw with a PW.
