I've been Playing Golf for: 3 years

My current handicap index or average score is: Never formally calculated as I'm not able to get to the course much. I'd guess about 18 (average score 90).

My typical ball flight is: R ight push with occasional shanks, when I try to make a good divot. I can get into a good rhythm and start hitting fairly consistent slight draws, but often at the expense of hitting fat.

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Right push and fat shots when trying to slide hips forward, getting my weight over to my left at impact, and trying to take a divot in front of the ball.

In these videos I'm just swinging away and, ironically, wasn't able to capture the shank.

I'd appreciate any feedback on where to focus!

Quick question: do you have enough room in there to swing without the fear of hitting the ceiling?

Yes, plenty of room with irons. Probably ok with hybrids, but wouldn't go higher then that.

Backswing looks good. You're going to want to spend some time doing what we call "getting the arms down faster."

Thanks, Erik. Would this be a key #3 issue? Also, are there any drills you could recommend to help with this?

Hi, In this video I'm working on my setup with making my right hand a bit stronger and standing further from the ball (recommended in last evolvr lesson by Brian). I'm also working on iacas' pointers above of trying to get the arms down faster. This is my attempt at a 5SK drill I viewed on the 5SK video thread. I'm hitting it a bit fat here. I'd really appreciate any pointers on why I'm hitting behind the ball. I don't do it on every shot, but I can't figure out why sometimes I hit it well and other times I'm behind the ball. Thanks!!!!!!!!

I'd suggest or recommend that you not worry about it - just work on the things you get from evolvr, and that's the best thing for you. KISS (Keep It Simple, Scopek), as they say. :)

I know, I know! I'm trying to be a Stupid Monkey, but can't help myself! I'm pretty analytical and a bit obsessive about things I'm passionate about. I'm working on it. :-D

I just went back and reviewed my last lesson. I'm not sure how I missed this, but Brian titled the lesson "Simple!". Hmmm, maybe there's a theme here? :8)

Hi. In these videos, I'm working on stuff from my last evolvr lesson (lesson #2). I'm doing these practice drills in slow motion and working on keeping my elbows together on my backswing, top of the swing, and down through impact. It might not be obvious, but I'm REALLY pulling my elbows in as tight as I can. I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks!!!

Very nice!

Thanks! Doing this drill is not easy for me and takes a lot of concentration. Anything you can see that I should work on?

The only thing I would really suggest is if this is your priority piece you are working on that it might be worth sending the practice vids to evolvr to get feedback on correctness. I did that when I was working on my last drill and basically Igot confirmation and minor adjustments, and this really helps and confirms the progress so it's worth it.. I can't add much else other than moral support for now :)

Thanks, I appreciate the support! I'm also pretty hesitant to comment on other people's swings myself. Yeah, I did just send these in to evolvr and literally just got them back. Stephan said it looks good and to just work this into a full swing and make sure I'm laying the club shaft down a bit on the downswing.

Nice, Stephan is really good! After I had the grip issues and turning with the correct wrist hing at a3 and some setup issues, he has really walked me through everything I'm doing now.. Before I was really interested in moving fast and improving even quicker, and it was probably because I was having such a hard time making contact. Now that I can finally make good contact about 80-85 percent of the time I am really taking it slow and just working hard on each piece for as long as it'll take as I'm not in a rush to make a quick improvement, but rather a lasting one! I think that should really be the goal of everyone trying to improve!

yeah, Stephan has been great so far. Brian did my first lesson, but then they switched. I'm not sure why. Maybe Brian was like, "This guy sucks so bad he needs more help then I can offer." ;-)

I'm in the same boat with wanting lasting improvements. I could have likely gotten down to a 10 hcp with my last swing (assuming I had a very good short game) as I was getting pretty consistent and could predict my ball flight. BUT, I wasn't making the kinda of clean, solid contact I know that it would take to be a truly good player and get into the single digits. It's been a tough road trying to improve because every time I try to make a swing change, I go backwards and it's hard to trust that changes take time and I'll likely suck at the beginning of a swing change. I made a conscious decision not to worry about how I looked on the course and decided just to put in the effort to make the changes necessary to take control of the low point of my swing , which is my goal. I just need to trust the lessons and stick with it!

I just want to say that over the last few weeks it's taken all my will power to dig deep and try to bring out my inner Stupid Monkey. Stephan has me doing drills that are very uncomfortable and it's taking a lot of concentration to not let myself go back to old ingrained patterns when I start hitting bad shots. My tendency is to either anlayze the heck out of why I'm doing and/or start switching to some other drill learned in the past that yields a faster result. It's really freaking hard to resist doing that, but....i.......must.....be.....strong.......

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
