I was recently fitted for irons.  After hitting several irons at a retailer I think I would like to buy the AP1.  My previous irons were x-18s.  714's come with stock XP95.  It seems like that is a pretty light shaft.  Should I go with the Dynamic gold S300 in lieu of the XP95 S300? Would I even feel any difference as an amateur?  Should I consider KBS?

I average in the mid 80's and hit my 7 iron about 165 yards.  With my regular shafts I hit a high ball flight.  My fitting suggested I should be hitting a stiff shaft and that I should have 1/4 to 1/2 inn of length added and 2 degree toe up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Plastic ball, metal stick, got it…

What shafts did you have in your X18's? If they were stock then the XP95 is a similar weight.

It's tough to give you an answer on what shaft because we don't know your ball flight numbers. KBS Tours will have slightly different performance characteristics compared to XP95/standard S300.

What shaft did the fitter recommend you use?

Both said I could use a stiff shaft. My x-18s were a uniflex shaft.

I get that but did they specify what stiff shaft? If you want to keep the weight similar, go with the XP95, if you want to go heavier then look at the S300 or KBS Tour. KBS Tour will tend to launch higher than the S300.

Pardon, the fitter recommended S300.

I realize Dynamic Gold and True Temper XP95 both are available in S300.

These two True Temper shafts have different weight and dynamics:

  • XP95_S300: 95 grams, high launch, medium spin.
  • Dynamic Gold S300: 130 grams, low launch, medium spin. (FCM = 5.8, slightly light to flex compared to other stiffs)

Note: Uniflex shafts from the X18 era were mid-launch, and would fall between the above two in weight; and would be slightly softer in flex.

KBS Tour_ Stiff: Mid-launch... Go see specs, taper and parallel tip versions are different.

Thanks for the info guys. I ordered the set with xp95. I'm excited for my first set of custom clubs. We'll see how I score in a few weeks. I will blame the clubs either way. :-P

    • My flop shots are 6-7° down (AoA). Does that answer it? 😄  The longer answer is… You have to be able to do both shots.
    • I hope you don't mind me raising this one from the dead. I got shortgamechef's video access thing for a few months in 2024. I watched his yip fix videos (the general gist is similar to the first video above, but with a lot more detail) and it made a lot of sense. I was working on it in my backyard off a mat for a while and my yippy thing was mostly gone. Aside from anything else, the flop shot using that technique is so easy and controllable. But I got onto a golf course for the first time of the year and found myself by the green on a downslope with the ball sitting down a little in the rough and I was, not to put too fine a point on it, f***ed. Shallow is all well and good from a good flat lie and I understand it, but you can't make that your be all and end all. I still don't know if it's a good idea to use steep all the time or just when you need to. I have a hard enough time with one technique, let alone too.  Just got a pitching skillest lesson with Erik and unless I misunderstood things some, he wants me a bit steeper. @iacas - where do you fall on the steep vs shallow argument and how do you vary it according to need?
