Just wondering if anyone has any experience with the SC shop--it seems a touch expensive, no? The grips on the site run on average to the tune of $30. TheGolfWorks.com sells comparable grips for $4 apiece.

Still, I do need two-ish inches taken off, and don't know if it would make a difference sending it to their shop, or having my pro shop guy do it.

In my bag:

Driver: Taylor Made R5 Dual-N, Stock stiff, 9.5*
Woods: 3 & 5 wood, Taylor Made Supersteel
Irons: Nike ProCombo, stiff, 3 through pitchingWedges: Wilson Harmonized, 55* SW, 60* LWPutter: Scotty Cameron Newport Studio 2.5Ball: Whatever ends up in my bag

The custom shop is for people who.... uhhh.... want to pay those prices. If you just want a shorter putter (you do know this will throw the weight WAY off, right?) then go to your local shop.

I wouldn't say it would be thrown "way" off. I've compared the 33" Newport in the pro shop (why didn't I just buy that in the first place you ask? beats me) with mine and the only difference is that it just feels a little lighter. Nothing some time on the putting green couldn't fix.

Received this message from the folks at the SC custom shop...

Hm...now I'm not sure what to do. I've got a 35 inches, would like a minimum of 34, if not 33.5. Hurm.

Custom shop was the best experiance I have ever had, you should see what my putter looked like before they fixed it. It looks like a work of art now. You pay the premium to get a premium service.

I think what I'll do is just have my guy at the pro shop cut off just a hair over 1/2" and get myself a thick, tacky Winn grip. The putter's only a few months old, so to go through the process of sending it back to the custom shop etc. seems unnecessary at this point.

I wouldn't mind so much if the putter head feels 5grams lighter really, so I might even go for the full 34. We shall see.

I would say "way off." There's a reason Scotty weights his 33" putters at 350 grams and his 35" putters at 330 grams. 20 grams is "way off," particularly when it comes to swing weight.

You got an email from the custom shop which serves as a little "toldja!" so I won't say it here. I will attempt to explain: A shorter club needs to be heavier because of the way we feel (and measure) swingweight: from a point 14 inches from the butt end of the club. With a longer putter, the weight is further from the fulcrum (and there's more shaft to add to the weight). Thus, it feels different than the same weight placed closer to the fulcrum.

Congratulations, the big check is in the mail.

I think I'll end up just taking off one half inch as to avoid any change. I think having a thicker grip will help too as I'll be able to choke down a touch and not touch the shaft.

I'll let you know how it goes post-op.

Lead tape on the head? No doubt it will look ugly but its a heck of a lot cheaper than getting a new putter.

you won't see the lead tape if you put two strips along the bottom of the putter.

The only problem is you won't see what kind of Scotty it is. But you already know, don't you?

I put two strips of lead tape on the sole of my 1996 Cameron Laguna after having it cut down an inch, and it has helped big time.

Depending on the model, adding weight is an option through the custom shop.

I cut mine down to 32 inches and had to add a ton of lead tape to get the feel back. I'd just sell yours on ebay and buy one that is the proper length.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
