@achadha7Β ,

This may contribute to your missed putts. Try to breathe slow a deep when reading your putt and when you get in your stance. Let the tension go out of your body. Β Focus only on the line and speed in your head, nothing else. Β It really does not matter if you make the putt or not. Β Life goes on. Β You Mother still loves you whether you miss the putt or make it! Β When you relax this way, you will get more consistent with your stroke and it will help you game overall.

I have to agree with this, just look at some PGA tour averages

% Made putts by distance for 2013,

20-25 feet: 11.67%

15-20 feet: 17.83%

10-15 feet: 29.82%

5-10 feet: 54.7%

Just to put it in different terms. Pro's just barely make 1 out of 10 putts from 20 - 25 feet.

TV has really made it seem like Pro golfers drain every putt when they don't.

That's really good info, Matt. Thanks for pulling that up. It seems what makes them such good putters is 10-15 ft. I cant hit 30%.

Your Mother still loves you whether you miss the putt or make it!

This made me laugh because it reminded me of a story from last summer.Β  I was finishing up my round and the 18th hole at this particular course is a straight Par 5, with the putting green immediately to the right of it.

I noticed a young girl (she was dressed like an LPGA player) on the putting green as I was walking up the fairway for my approach.Β  She was hitting what looked to be nothing more than 3 foot putts, over and over and over.Β  As I got closer I noticed a woman that I assumed to be her mother, sitting off to the side, maybe 20 yards away from her under the shade of a tree.Β  I also noticed that the girl was probably no more than 12 or 13 years old and the task seemed to be the last thing she wanted to be doing.Β  After each group of putts, she'd grab the balls and then look over at her mother as if to say "Am I done yet?"Β  The mother just sat there staring, and the girl dropped the balls back onto the green and hit the putts again.Β  This happened maybe 3 or 4 times while I was finishing up the last hole.Β  I was amused.Β  The mother and daughter were not.

I'm not so sureΒ your statement above is always true. :-P

So, the alignment rods come in handy when her kid misses a putt?

This happens with many of the Asian kids and parents, I mean they are really serious. . . Wait, I'm Asian. . .I think. . .??? I was brought up in a family environment that forces the children to really work super hard with high expectations. Fortunately, my sister felt the brunt of this behavior, as I disqualified myself early on in life by flunking a 3rd grade math test written in another language (like German or French) when I was 4 years old. B-) . So, I'm told by my older cousins. :smartass:

all great advice but the issue seems to bt stress for me . today i spent an hour on the practise green. 20 mins for 5 feet putts. 20 mins for 10-12 feet putts and 20 mins for 20 footers for a 2 putt.

it all worked beautifully. then i decided it was time to hit the course for a quick round of 9. and bam..... it all went to the dogs..... missing 2-3 footers for par and bogie,,, had 2 pars the entire round ... and hit 23 putts ... :(

i need to get rid of the stress when playing the round .... i guess the 11 on the first hole par 5 also led to my frustration ...1st stroke OB, teed up for 3rd... ob... tee up for 5th just missed ob ..... total score for 9 holes including the 11 ... 53

Just relax. Take a deep breath. If you hit a bad shot, forget about it. The next shot is the shot that counts. It sounds like you have it down based off of good practice there. You seem to be adding pressure to yourself. I find whistling a song helps set my mind at ease. Go to your Happy Place!

@achadha7

When you miss those 2-5 footers. Β Is it missing them wide, or leaving them short?

If it's wide try this:

Set the putter firmly on the ground and make minor tweaks to the alignment of the face while you look back and forth between the hole and the face of the putter several times. Β As soon as your're happy with the face alignment. (don't give yourself time to start over thinking about your mechanics) just look at the hole , pull back and release.

mostly lipping em out or just missing the hole by maybe 1/2 a rotation

How far is the ball after the miss? Lipping out to me indicates that the ball is still moving relatively quickly, and if your ball is only off by half a cup then it should be a tap in next only if the ball is not going too fast.

My best guess is that distance control is your enemy. I had this issue as well, then stopped drinking 2-3 cups of espresso before every round. True, but just kidding.

Use the links Erik gave us regarding putting. There are many more on this site as well. Distance control will probably save you at least 10 putts per round or more.

the 2nd putt lips put rite next to the hole max od a foot away and is a tap in ... i have read several things eric and others posted. i tried the theory of " dont leave it short, 12 inches short is worse than 2 feet away and that didnt work at all for me at all since i was going 3 feet pats the hole and 3 footers are a PAIN for me ....my hands literally start shaking .... as for coffee / espresso... 110 - 115 outside with a real feel of 120 ... not having coffee at all

You have the distance control to get it close at 5 feet, but not from 10-20 feet away. Neither do I, really.

However, I sink at least 70% from inside 5 feet. The PGA average for this is around 95%, and even with my horrible statistics from sub-5' I still manage 38 putts. I read from a book "Golf My Own Da## Way" by John Daly of all people. that if you have 45 minutes to warm up, hit your 150 club and focus on the 3 foot putts before every round. I have never practiced from this distance before, but I think it is important if you are having trouble from 5 feet in.

You sound like you just need work making your sub-5' distances to at least 70%, and you will be 7 strokes less than your 45 putt round to break into the mid 80s.

I wish this were my only problem. One day, I will also start practicing my putting in earnest.

  • 3 weeks later...
Thank you all. Last 2 weeks I tried smthing different. Did not practice putting, played a round on Monday and broke 95 with 40 putts. Played again on Tuesday and had a lovely 88... Total putts Monday 40 and Tuesday 35. Did miss a couple of 3-5 footers. When I was practising it used to put doubts in my mind when I played. Last 2 rounds I putted tension free and Tuesday had 6 par's ans 1 birdie. Thanks all

I imagine a 3ft diameter circle around the hole, or the dustbin lid as my mate calls it, i generally aim for that (obviously at the hole to) but i try to imagine if im short or long, left or right, im still withing this lid, then tap in from there

Great job.

You see, even putting to the normal bogey level (32 to 36) does not take a lot of rocket science, just the right mental state. ;-)

I like Dave Stockton putting technique of eyeing putt, address ball and putt with no practice swing.

Exactly what I did [quote name="Lihu" url="/t/74199/really-really-really-need-putting-help-10-girs-not-a-single-par/100_100#post_995853"] Great job. I think you were jinxed when you were making 50+ putts.

Don't worry, that's probably the secret to your current success. Now just get your putts down to 36.

If you get another 50+ putt round you have my permission to hit your caddy with your putter. :-$
