Up until a couple of weeks ago I had the problem of hooking my long irons and my driver.  So I took the advise I received on this forum and posted my swing under Members Swings as well as on the Golf Channel's Swing Fix.  I took the advise I received and tried to get into a more athletic stance and changed my swing a bit.  And I also purchased a used Ping G25 9.5 driver, set to 9.  I went to the range and taped the face of the driver and hit a half bucket.  I found that the Ping driver feels much better, I am making better contact and am hitting the sweet spot (or close to it) instead of the toe hits.  However now I have a horrible slice.  I am in the process of finding a pro right now, but I would like some advise as to what I might work on until I go for my first lesson.

Thanks

I had a Ping G10 10.5* Regular TPC 129D shaft for 3 years and it did this EXACT same thing. I draw my long irons and draw/hook my 3 wood, but that Ping G10 had a wicked slice on it. I never could get rid of it. I put 2 different shafts in it (ProLaunch Platinum & Aldila NV both in stiff flex) and it never fixed anything. I ended up selling the driver 2 weeks ago and got a Callaway X Hot 9.5* Stiff. Problem gone! This driver even draws/hooks like my 3 wood. I have a friend who has the G15 and it does the same thing for him. Can't figure out why. I'm beginning to think it's Ping?

I'm thinking gear effect from hitting off the toe probably contributed to the ball flight. Now that you are hitting closer to the sweetspot, the ball will behave more in line with your swing. Btw, did you get fit or did you just buy the club and set it up? I'm just wondering why you would select 9 degrees as your loft.

Since I am one of those guys that thinks if I have Ping irons I want Ping woods. So I went through the fitting program on the Ping website. It actually recommended an 8.5 loft. I picked up the 9 cheap, so why not give it a try.

I never did like those online "fitting" systems. I took a look at your swing thread; it appears to me that your hooks were coming from either the toe hits or a left facing clubface at impact. Just by looking at your swing, I would have assumed you slice the ball. I'm assuming you looked at the videos @iacas linked; how have the changes been? You should update the thread when you get a chance.

Ok, now I'm intrigued. Why did the Ping program recommend only 8.5* loft? What is your driver swing speed? Would you characterize your swing as being a sweeping swing, hit the ball on the up swing, or hit the ball on the down swing?

Changes to my swing, knees bent, butt out, chin up and arms straighter down. Backswing slower, left arm straighter, elbows closer to my body ending up with left shoulder under my chin. I feel like I am hitting the better, but still can't get consistently straight ball flight.

Better contact is good, but it's not really about hitting the ball straight so much as hitting a curve that you can control and account for.

Try to update your swing thread. It will be easier to go through what you need to work on if we can see the video of what you are actually doing.

    • Couple things to update First on the clubs/ball. I switched golf balls to the Left Dash ProV1x. It seems like a great fit for me. I always need lower spin off the tee, it's about a half club longer into greens, and still gives me enough spin with chips and pitches to hit whatever shot I need. The durability is insane too, played 35 holes with one over my last two rounds and it still looked brand new until I lost it. Hybrid is no longer. Couldn’t quite get a consistent strike and the random snap hook left was always lurking as soon as the strike drifted out towards the toe. I know it was me not the club but I couldn’t stand the lefts anymore. Titliest fitting guy came to our club a few days ago and I had been curious about the T200 3iron. I hit a few with it and the stock HZRDUS graphite shaft, it wasn’t bad at all but I could definitely tell when I mishit it. Then the fitter had me try the U505 3iron. When he asked if I was open to trying it I said something like “Isn’t that the game improvement one?” and he said “Just trust me and hit a few with it”. Within 5 swings I was sold. Suddenly it didn’t look as big and chunky when I started hitting rocket after rocket. It did every single thing I want a 3 iron to do. It flies very high, forgiving, can hit it off the tee and ground, can flight it low when needed, and best of all, it doesn’t go left. He had me try to snap hook one left and it resulted in a nice tight draw, nowhere close to a hook. Tried it with the stock shaft and their upgraded one, ended up hitting it the best with the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ-95. Ended up getting a great deal on a used one that arrived yesterday so going to go measure my numbers with it today at the range. I expect to be using this a lot for 2nd shots into par 5s, being that 230-250 club. Hit some on the Mevo+ yesterday and the distance is exactly what I needed.     From a playing perspective, been playing pretty solid so far this season, driving and putting have been solid overall, approach shots have been good for the most part and short game wasn't great to start the year but it's been getting better lately with some more dedicated practice. Compared to scratch over 7 rounds:
    • so with the driver. Feel more arm  width at A4. keep an in the eye on the ball. The first move from the top is lowering the hands down. Don’t mix that up with looking up at the target as the club comes down from A4 with the body. Feel like I get width with the arms from the chest in the Downswing.

    • Went back and reviewed my rounds this year at my home course to fill out the spreadsheet. Realized I have made at least par on each hole but two that I have bogied. At my skill level, it gives me a new confidence that I can play each hole decently well and strong together a lower score. Great mental boost.
