Okay my long time best friend and now roommate started playing golf this year. We have both really gotten better. Any I usually play bogey golf or slightly better depending on the day. When I play with him tho I normally miss easy putts and chips and my tee shots are a little worse as well. This weekend I finally beat him (hopefully I can keep that up lol). Anyway obviously its because I'm focusing more on beating him than playing my game. Anyway just wanted to hear some similar stories.

Stop choking........LOL    Congrats on beating your friend though.........

My dad is like this...  he's a much better golfer than when he plays with me.   When we play together, I bring out the worst in him.  He wants to impress me so bad, that the pressure gets to him and it effects his play.

I focus so hard on beating my dad when we play golf. My dad was a star athlete in high school and has pretty much beaten me in everything. You name it.. tennis, football, hockey, etc. Golf has seemingly become my dominant sport between the two of us, but I still manage to choke when I play with him. My putting and chipping game becomes absolute garbage that is for sure.

We must harness the crystiles.

I have a close friend that I play with a lot.  We have been friends since the 7th grade (1972).  I have only beat him once at golf.  He has been playing a lot longer than me, but I am creeping closer all the time. We are finally playing in the same league now.

We went to Florida this March and played 5 rounds in four days.  The last two days, I would have beat him except for a bogey on the final holes.  I don't add up my score during a round, so we didn't know until afterwards.

Don't lose hope.  Things can change drastically over the course of a year.

A buddy and I play 15-16 times a year.  I am probably a bit steadier overall but otherwise we are well matched.  When we play together we bet $1/$1/$1 in match play for front/back/total.  My friend likes to keep a running total on our $3 bets.  When we started this in 2011, I was down close to $35 by the time September rolled around.  It didn't matter that I usually had a lower score, he just had a knack of winning one more hole on each nine.  I finally rallied a bit in Autumn and going into 2012 I was only down by about $25.  Then 2012 went my way and he never won a match.  I erased the deficit and built a surplus.  By 2013 he was so thoroughly beaten down he refused to play our bet most times and when he did, I still thumped him.  Crushed him again in our first outing of 2014.

I was the buddy for so many years with a best friend. He'd play with other friends and shoot lights out...it didn't matter what he shot when we played I always beat him...he'd usually end up choking, lol....It was kinda fun.

I have a little bit of a golf friendship like this. My buddy is much better than me off the tee, but I'm much better with irons and around the green. He always tries to get in my head when teeing off, and make it a long drive competition, because he knows I'm longer off the tee and want to shut him up, but that I'm also more prone to disaster. So when I shut him out, we're usually 50/50. But when I give into pride, he'll beat me due to the disasters off the tee. Play the course and your game... Not against your friend. That's what works for me anyway

I don't know about the putting and chips, but I know that when I used to play with friends who i really wanted to beat, and who I was much better than, I would always play my worst because I was constantly over swinging and trying to impress them.

You know, I had kind of the opposite of this happen last week and it was pretty funny.  I got paired with a few randoms at the beginning of the round and tied one guy on the first hole while beating the other 2, beat all 3 on the second hole with a 12 foot par saving putt.  On the third hole I was the only one to land my drive on the green and went on to tie a guy who made a completely lucky par saving putt.  On the fourth hole it got reeeeeeal quiet and I could tell they were a little bit intimidated.  Yeah we were all hackers but it was clear I had a little bit more control of my hacker-ness than they did and they knew it, but at the same time they didn't want to lose and/or embarrass themselves.  So the more they tried to "focus" the worse they seemed to do.  I, on the other hand, just kept playing my normal game and continued to tie or beat them.

It reminded me of rounds I played last year where I was paired with people who were obviously better than me and how I wanted to match their shots, especially on holes that I thought were within my ability to do so.  It was nerve wracking thinking I had to hit my best shot just to match something that these guys made look easy, and in the end it probably made me play worse.  Anyway, I was getting a little bit of that vibe from these people I was paired with last week and honestly... it was pretty rad.  lol  I think it gave me a little bit of an idea how intimidating it could be to play a round with someone like Woods or Mickelson even as a fellow tour player.

Yeah I think anytime your focus is on beating someone more than just playing your game the results arent going to be good. Doesnt help my buddys a trash talker. When I beat him I just keep quiet and let him baskin it.

    • Depends on how short you were coming up on these shots. A bit more wind? Also, maybe you were swinging at 2-3 mph slower the next day.  I think the biggest thing is not adjusting. Like making assuming your stock shot is not enough and taking 1 club up. Not sure what type of adjustments you were making in your decision making.
    • No one should measure a joint mobility away from that joint. If you go to physical therapy, they are not measuring your knee mobility based on your midline. It is based at the joint. Shoulder mobility should be measured in reference to the shoulder joint.
    • He's using a driver swing, while I used the iron swing. Bryson goes from about 65° B to 15° B, hence the 50°. If you bend your right elbow, you're going to pull your hands across your chest some. Conversely, if you abduct your right arm and hold onto a grip with your left arm, you can see how extending the right elbow as we do in the golf swing during the downswing will "pull" the right shoulder/humerus forward (adducting it, as going from 65° to 15° of abduction is). Even people who pull their right shoulder WAY too far around them eventually get it "back in front" when their right arm/elbow extends. So, such a motion shows up as shoulder adduction even though the movement that causes it is just widening the trail elbow. The left hand on the grip almost "pulls" the hands forward as the left arm can't stretch much (there's some shoulder protraction, but that's almost maxed out at P4). Oh, I downloaded it and watched it (and commented there) before he blocked me. It's what led to him posting the comment in the "update" above. 😄  Single shoulder range of 75°, and that's going out well into the follow-through. 50° Max range up to impact. Manavian's video is bad. He keeps saying "midline" which is just a horrible way to look at it. He also kept saying that the club was moving that amount — also wrong. Adding left and right together is really freaking dumb. Another golf instructor said "That's like saying the player has 100 degrees of knee bend (adding left knee bend to right knee bend) 🤦‍♂️" (similar to what the biomechanist said about squatting). Also, see my post above about elbow bend. That's why Plummer’s alignment stick demo is so intellectually dishonest. A golfer can't get anywhere near that position on the left with his left hand on the alignment stick (quoted below).
    • That makes no sense at all.  so, I watched that Instagram. Here is a summary...  Bryson.... Address: Trail Shoulder 0 degrees adduction. P4: Trail Shoulder 65-deg abduction. Impact: Right shoulder 15-deg abduction. P9: 10 degrees adduction. Rory... Address: Trail Shoulder 16 degrees adduction. P4: Trail Shoulder 26 degrees abduction. Impact: Right shoulder 0 degrees abduction.  P9: 18 degrees of adduction.  DJ... Address: Trail Shoulder 4 degrees adduction. P4: Trail Shoulder 42 degrees abduction. Impact: Right shoulder 2 degrees abduction.  P9: 15 degrees of adduction.  Their point is that arm doesn't stay on the trail side. That the arms have to get across the chest from P4 to P9. I mean they do. What matters is the rate of which it happens relative to the position of the swing. The trail shoulder at P9 is not abducted a lot. The range of that total abduction movement is like 40 to 70 degrees. Bryson might be an outlier. Rory might be an outlier as well.  A couple of points.  1. None of them had any adduction at impact. So, this tells me the trail arms stays on the trail side of the body at impact. Is it moving towards lead shoulder, yes. It doesn't happen till post impact. The right side of the body is moving towards the target, so the arms don't have to as much as people think.  2. Trail shoulder adduction from Impact to P9 is 18 to 25 degrees.  3. P9 adduction of the trail shoulder is only about 2 to 12 degrees more adducted than at address. The arms/hands stay in front of the chest a long-time post impact. If Rory, from his address position just rotated his body towards the target and raised up his arms so he is at P9. He basically didn't have to move his trail arm further across his chest than where he started at address. Visualize that for a bit. I bet for people who tend to stall and drag their arms across their body to hit the ball, that would emphasize how much the arms stay in front of the body and how much you have to turn.
    • Do you know how Manavian is measuring his shoulder adduction-abduction that purports to demonstrate 50 degrees or motion in Bryson's downswing? I know the broader biomechanics research/scientific literature on this suggests shoulder adduction-abduction is only a modest contributor of force generation in the downswing, so I'm definitely not convinced by anything he's arguing, I'm just curious how different people can be claiming to use ostensibly the same "data" to tell a much different story.
