ya i would say bent must be struggling this time of year

Yeah not ideal at all for newly planted bent. It's hard enough to keep established bent greens in good shape in summer so getting them to aggressively grow is about impossible.

  • 2 weeks later...

Spread cores from the good green on number 18 that we haven't messed with yet. We'll see how it does.

Front nine still getting better but slowly.

Not good. It wouldn't surprise me in the least any day when I went to work if there was a sign that said

"Course closed. It's been fun but we are out of here."

Most of the greens have at least one good area to put the hole location but I'm still patching other areas of some of the greens with plugs from the putting green.

Spot where I put the plugs from the putting green in the picture I posted on 5/28.

Spot where I put plugs in the picture from 12 days ago.

Number 18 that we didn't touch until we spread the cores from another green on it in the picture from 3 weeks ago.

Typical back nine green today.

Front nine still getting a little better each week.

This is really impressive.

Excellent job, especially with these limited resources!

I am in west central Alabama.  The winter didn't do us any favors but luckily we didn't lose any greens.  Many of the courses in neighboring areas lost several greens and are spending the summer putting on temporary greens.  I guess you can't really call it putting more like whacking the ball at the hole.

Best of luck, MS256.

Thanks. Most of the courses around here had bent grass and they were fine. Some of them lost fairways if they had them mowed too short.

I complain all the time that the owner where I work cuts the fairway grass much too long for my liking but it was a good thing this year. We would have lost both greens and fairways if they had been mowed short.

The closest course to me with bent greens has huge fans to combat the heat.  Last week bent would have gone up in flames, though today is pretty nice.

It wasn't very hot here on the mountain last week. Sunday was pretty hot but not enough to effect the greens any after I watered them in the morning.

Feels like football weather today. :-D

Yeah they are getting a little better every day. Now at least there are big enough areas, that are pretty good, for a couple of different hole locations on each green but still can't put the pin in some of the traditional locations on a few greens yet. I try to at least have an area around the pin where a 15 foot putt from any direction will be on good grass. Farther from the pin than that and I can't help them. ;-)

The places where I put the plugs on the greens don't lack much being filled in.

Plugged on 5/28.

Plugged 3 1/2 weeks ago.

Front nine number 5.

18th green that we spread the cores on. Mowed today for first time.

I have more pin location options every week now.

I think we'll probably be able to use the 18th green this weekend for the first time this year.

those plugs really spread and healed great! you guys building a big nursery yet?

Hmmm. That wouldn't be a bad idea for me to put in at home. I have the land and some farm equipment so it wouldn't be hard to do.

Yeah it's amazing how that much bare ground can fill it like that. Also amazing how complete that winter kill was and how places that we haven't touched yet are still dead.

Like this back tee box that we aren't using that I took a picture of yesterday.

    • Best drive I've ever hit: I will not be answering any questions about the rest of the hole. Or the round, for that matter.
    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
    • Once, on a course in Middleton, Massachusetts that I used to love but has since closed down,  I hit the wrong half of a huge, UK style double green.  Then I made the hundred foot putt.  Tough to  forget that one.
    • No. But if I can still play next year, I'll almost certainly be even worse. That's the reality of not being young.🙁
