My wife's grandfather have me a set of irons that I just don't know much about. They are black dot ping zing's. I've only hit them once. They were fine to hit. Nothing spectacular, but nice for an older set of free clubs. Does any one know much about them? The set is 5i-SW with no pitch. He didn't tell me anything about them, but I'd love to find out what I can. Thanks guys

All I can tell you is...A ton of guys played those during the 90's. Never hit them though, but the guy's that did, swore by them.

@Hammer 4 Thanks man. The only time I've hit them, I really liked em. I think I'll take them out to the range. I bet I can slice em as good as anything else

They are very useable irons even today. I picked up a random PING ZING 5 iron years ago and keep it in one of my bags as a go to club for certain shots. If it was me, I think I would need to pick up a 4 iron. The SW is a fairly strong loft, so you might not need a PW, or you might.

In the bag:

Driver: PING 410 Plus 9 degrees, Alta CB55 S  Fairway: Callaway Rogue 3W PX Even Flow Blue 6.0; Hybrid: Titleist 818H1 21* PX Even Flow Blue 6.0;  Irons: Titleist 718 AP1 5-W2(53*) Shafts- TT AMT Red S300 ; Wedges Vokey SM8 56-10D Putter: Scotty Cameron 2016 Newport 2.5  Ball: Titleist AVX or 2021 ProV1

Good clubs, perfectly playable, but a sales disaster for Ping when they first introduced them. A radical look and departure from the popular Eye2 clubs that they were to designed to replace. Ping quickly switched to the Zing 2 the following year, and to the more Eye2-like ISI irons after that. Looks like your set is in pretty good shape. I'd hit 'em!

I've got a set of the Ping Zing in nickel, they are considerably softer than the cast and I felt like they were softer than the copper version.  I've been hanging on to them as they will become my "I've become to old to hit forged with my arthritic hands" clubs!

Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?

    • Day 23: weird day, and only had a little bit of time. Just did mirror work again, working on where the elbow is in the downswing
    • I flipped over to this tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone else watch? I picked it up during the golf relay event, but seeing these pros out having fun in alternative events was refreshing and entertaining. I’m sure it will be on in reruns in the next week or so, so I won’t spoil the outcome. Im curious what others thought of it. I’m recording it’s later airing to see the beginning.
    • Day 443 - 2025-12-17 Made a few swings in testing some things out at another academy. Might pop up on someone else's podcast in a few weeks.
    • Day 37 (17 Dec 25) - nine hole round with my good friend.  We got paired up with a couple of the men’s group regulars as part of their shootout.  Started off with a wonderful quad bogie and then a dbl on three to be six over thru three holes.  Game went 180° over the next five as I shot one under (including a chip in birdie on hole six and four up and down 1 putt pars) for a net finish of five over. What could have been a really tough nine became a solid finish due to staying in the moment and not checking out.  Great day in course management and keeping perspective .
    • Day 127 12-17 Backswing and flow practice. Took advantage of the 60 degeee weather(it was 20 degrees Sunday)
