I heard Jim Boeheim (US assistant coach) talking about that this morning and he made a point that these guys are always going to be playing basketball in the offseason anyway, whether organized or pickup. This injury is a fluke thing and it is probably better that they are playing in a regulated environment like Team USA than a pickup game in a gym somewhere.

I read something about that and mostly agree.  If George misses 41 games, the insurance policy pays his salary, not the Spurs, but it doesn't help them become more competitive or appease the season ticket holders.

Such a horrible injury to this young guy. When I saw it on ESPN just minutes after it happened, I felt sick. Not really from the injury, but because the kid is young and has a long road to recovery now. I didn't see anything graphic besides the break itself, so I'm hoping it was just a clean break and he comes back 100%. I also saw Kevin Ware's though on the other hand, and that was 100% worse visually (you could clearly see 3-4 inches of bone sticking out of his shin's skin) and he never played another game.

Was awful watching this, I agree about the fact he is so young! It is somehow worse because the potential for this guy to be brilliant, wish him the best for 100% recovery!

that's not the worst leg break in the sense of watching it happen, but never the less it still looks painful.

there is a video on the internet of i think an african football (soccer to you americans  ) game and one guy almost jumped to another guys leg and it looks like it gets folded in 3 places, that is not nice to watch...
