If your flex isn't stiff enough for you, you'll probably draw/hook the ball...but I can't be sure it on it. I don't really know to be honest, just a guess. I also think that it really depends on the path of your swing way more then the flex.

Wouldn't you hook the ball if you were left handed too? Instead of hooking to the left it would hook to the right. Still a hook.

Not stiff enough = higher ball flight

What flex your irons set is in? I'm guessing it's regular. Honestly, my swing speed is 94 and I'm still using regular. My friend's swing speed is 105 and he's using regular. Why? Because we noticed that there's only little difference between regular and stiff flex shafts for irons. So it's better to save your money, besides there's saying if you're not certain between more flexible and stiffer flex, choose the more flexible flex because it won't do as much damage as stiffer one.

Short answer: You can't know for sure without being checked by a good clubfitter, so go see one before you change your shafts.

Long answer:

I think in general it goes (for a right handed golfer):

Shaft too stiff: Low shots, to the right (pushed/sliced).

Shaft too soft: High shots, to the left (pulls/hooks).

But the "guru" fitter guys like Tom Wishon point out that it's a little more complicated than that.

Proper flex for someone has to do not only with your swing speed, but your rate of acceleration, type of transition, if you are a smooth swinger or quick hitter--either type can have either a fast or slow club head speed. Also, there is a difference in performance between standard weight and lightweight shafts, the flex point on the shaft, and the shaft's overall bend profile.

So, the best thing to do is go to a fitter first and get tested. Either go to a fitting center recommended by one of the major manufacturers, or go to the Professional Clubmaker's Society website where you can search for a clubmaker in your area. Here is the link:

Good luck with it.

How about my new i10's that I got fitted for a black dot. I push to the right a bit with a normal ball flight. I think its just my swing so i feel like I need to go to the range after typing this.

Honestly not much difference. It's all about swing plane. I hit fine with both regular and stiff after I completely revamped my swing posture with a coach. My coach hits bombs with even a lady flex but his clubs are x flex. I think he did mention that if the flex is too soft for you you will tend to hook more and if it is stiff you will slice more.

If you can swing at 100 or more and are serious about improving further I don't think it would hurt to go with stiff in the long run but that is just my own personal opinion.

But... normally slices are high trajectory shots and hooks are low...?

Icestorms do not help in keeping a golfer's sanity so I am going out on a limb here and contradicting a TST staffer . So here goes:

The whippier the shaft, the greater the possibility of your hands being way ahead of the clubhead. This has to create an open clubface and a swipe at the ball creating clockwise sidespin. sliced tomatoes.

But I think this is a great generalization too. If you turn that left knuckle down sufficiently, it comes right around.

Hope the rest of the US has power and all!.

Actually, Hot Stix Golf did a test and found that a stiff flex shafts hat a narrower landing area and greater distance with a 100mph swing speed. However, an extra stiff flex shaft yielded less desirable results... and so did regular flex shafts.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
