...I think I did, at any rate. I tried the No-Backswing Swing in September's issue of Golf Magazine, and it did wonders. I got all the distance back that I've lost with my irons since the beginning of May. I'm actually hitting the ball on the sweet spot, and I'm pounding the ball miles. (I have been struggling with hitting the ball off the toe - I have done it on probably 95 percent of all my full shots since May).

I am now pounding the Hell out of the ball, adding some thirty percent distance to all of my shots. Today, I was hitting driver, 7 iron into a short par 5 - something pretty much unheard of me until now - and flew the green by 30 yards.

Granted, this was just attempted randomly on the fifth hole today, when I was just messing around. There is almost no consistency - I developed an unhappy over-the-top causing the occasional banana ball, not to mention I played for a draw so many times and got a fade, when I prefer to play a draw for extra roll, especially off the tee. Also, I have a hard time coiling properly with a short backswing, not enough time to get into position. I figure, if I can get consistency with this, I can make more par 5's in two and shave more strokes.

Thing is, I only have about six weeks left to play any real golf before it gets too cold, and I just started on this today. Leaves the big question - can I 1)shoot below 80 and/or 2) get my handicap below a 10 before the year is out? I personally think it's a long shot but it's possible. With the way I've been hacking it up lately I'm probably closer to a 14 or 15 handicap, but this could be the turnaround I'm looking for.

Prospects look good - the shots that did go straight include a 350 yard drive (probably hit a turtle or something), a 280+ 3 wood, a 210-something 4 iron, and a 7 iron from 140 that flew the green by 30 yards into the mush. Granted, that's with roll and with how dry it is there's a lot of roll, but that's still good carry distance.

Yeah, I've fixed part of the disaster that was my swing three months ago, though. I was reverse pivoting and swaying sideways - I focused on turning in place and making a narrower stance (having too wide makes a turn almost impossible). And now I'm not worried about going past parallel, so I stop it just short of parallel.

I've flown short par threes with just a 7-iron. What'd you need the driver for?

Sorry, but that ain't a "breakthrough." Breakthroughs come after you work on something for awhile and finally get it. Breakthroughs are consistent.

Woo for typos.

Actually, it was a short par 5, measuring, 495, I want to say.

Breakthrough-to-be, perhaps? Is there even a word for that?

Next year. No point in forking over $25 for a card I'll have to renew in three months, anyway. Or at least that's what the pro at my course said.

Keep us posted on the no backswing swing progress. It really intrigues me as a potentially significant out of the box idea. Still haven't had the courage to use it on the course.

I will do that. Instead of going way past parallel, I'm stopping just short of it, maybe parallel. It gave me the best contact with the irons I've had all summer, although there's some quirks that need to be worked out. With classes starting again I don't have nearly as much time to play as I'd like - I'll get back when I do play again, though.

I've piled on him before, and he got a little pissed at me. But the thing is, I come here a lot for advice...especially from those golfers who are better than me. I see his handicap listed at 12 or something so I figure he's a better player than I am, then I saw his swing and almost spit my coffee all over my keyboard.

Don't have to look pretty to go straight. I've seen players with the prettiest swings who have never broken 85 as well as super ugly swings that can crack 80 every time.

Yeah but he kept swinging and missing at the ball....If your doing that you really cant even have a handicap, there is no way.

if he really improved his swing, lets see a new video..... i think that would be fair judgemnt; knowing he can keep re-filming til he hits a new one, he should hit an odvious monster drive on video...
