How long do you use your driver before moving on to a new one?

In the bag

Irons - Adams Golf Tight Lies 5-SW CG 12 52 degree 58 degree spin milled Classic #2 Putter

Until the head falls off the darn thing! Then if a wad of bazooka bubble gum will hold it back together I will try to get another round in on it.

Doin' my best to keep 'em in the short grass,

Funny, I jwas just at my storage rack and found five drivers in the penalty box. I use em until they misbehave then bring a sub. Pretty much same for putters (9 in the pen)

I just recently got a Titleist 907D2. Up to that point I had played the Titleist 975D for quite a few years. Most of the time it's a swing issue, but a lot of players would rather try the latest greatest thing. Of course, that's what keeps the Titleist's, Taylormade's, and others in business.

I've been using my Nike Ignite 460cc for nearly two years and I am still in love with it. I can't see any reason to change your driver until you "outgrow" your current relationship. Currently I can't see anything that would tempt me away from mine either except maybe a 907D2 or SQ Tour.

But I'm like that (cheap ) and some people (loaded) just like to have a new club for the sake of it.

Yeah I just dropped 170 bucks on my driver and I plan to use that until it falls apart.

Once i settled with a particular driver. That's pretty much it... I've spent the time already doing the research, testing countless of hours, on shafts and heads just to get it right based on my swing. I'm also good enough to know that i can take just about any driver and i'll be able to drive it about the same +/- yds and roll... It would have to have a pretty good hype for me to change.

I spent about 300 for mine, and I feel like clubs lose their value so fast it's almost not worth buying new ones anymore. I haven't been able to play much lately because of the new job but, I don't think I would buy a new driver anytime soon.

I have used 3 drivers since I started playing golf when i was about 12. And the first one was an actual wood driver. So since I am 23 now I guess you could say that i get a new driver ever 3 years or so.

Although this is my second season with my current driver and I have no plans on getting a new one anytime soon. It is had for me to justify buying a new driver when I hit my current one well.

My last three drivers have been used. I like to wait until the new model comes out and see how many people are ditching the one they bought last year. I bought the 905R on ebay for $150 with shipping. It was still selling for $299 in stores, but the 907 line was coming out soon. If you are willing to play with something that is not the latest and greatest, there is no reason to pay full price. Get the model that it replaces and you are still getting new technology, but at a lower price.

I have used 3 drivers this year. I started the year with my G5, had a short stint with a Nike Sumo, and last week I got my R7 superquad TP. Before that I used that G5 for 2 full seasons. It depends, this year one of my main goals was to gain better control of the driver. The G5 wasn't cutting it, I couldn't control it very well so I decided a change was needed. The Nike was a good club and I probably would have stayed with it if I hadn't hit the R7. I think the R7 will stay for a while as it gives me many options with the movable weights.

The moral is there is no set time you have to keep a driver. If you like it keep it, if you outgrow it or like something better, and have the money to change, then buy a new one. I am not committed to woods and putters. If they don't perform I find something that does.

Irons, on the other hand I don't tend to change very often. I spend a great deal of time researching and picking them out then I spend a lot of time learning what the distances for each club. I personally think that changing irons and wedges too often breeds inconsistancy. I figure I will use my current irons for at least another season.

I used my Ping eye 2 persimmon from 1993 until about a year ago. For a long time I saw no reason to go to a metal wood. I wasn't hitting it as far as some but it was always straight. Tried a generic metal wood last year ($29.99) Liked it, so I bought a G5 off the internet for $175. Two of my golf partners bought the R7, I keep with them and often a little farther because the G5 is pretty straight.
Now there's the G10(what happen to 7,8and 9?) I'm hanging with the G5. As long as you are hitting it why change?

Haha...me too.

I played the Eye 2 until the metal ISI came out. I just recently picked up the Callaway X460 Tour for a steal on callawaypreowned.com So I guess that's roughly 6 years. After the way I hit the X460 today, I don't see changing anytime soon. One guy I play with is a gear chaser. He bought an R7 superquad when they first came out, and just today he bought an FT-i.....I still out drive him, go figure.

I have had my 580XD for almost 3 years. I'm getting a new driver this winter, mostly just for ha-ha's, I really don't think it will make much of a difference. Improving my swing will be the difference maker.

If you're going to change your swing maybe you should wait until you have the new swing close to where you want it, then get fit for a new driver.

Swing = Stacked and On Plane when possible.

    • While on vacation in Punta Cana a few weeks ago I played with rental clubs, Mizuno Pro 245's with KBS Tour Lite steel shafts. Surprisingly, I was blown away, not only by the distance, trajectory and dispersion I was getting but also about how soft and buttery they felt. It got me thinking.... IT'S TIME FOR NEW IRONS! Just yesterday, at my local Golf Galaxy, I tested them again side by side with the JPX Forged (recommended by the Mizuno rep who happened to be there) which also felt pretty good. Not as buttery soft as the 245's but they did produce slightly better numbers on off-center hits. Also, I haven't played with forged clubs with steel shafts in 10 years thinking I was getting too old and that I needed the lighter weight but these clubs with that shaft felt really, really good. So that's my long and drawn-out intro to my question: Does anyone here at TST play with either of these clubs and if so, what's your opinion?

    • By today’s standards that’s certainly true, but they weren’t having any trouble hitting golf balls in 2005 so I’ve equipped myself with what was among the very best equipment around that time for a very reasonable investment. If I get to the point where I feel like I’ve outgrown that stuff, I’ll reward myself with something more current. But for now I don’t need adjustable loft and lie and modern head shape, just a good quality, proven club with a clean club face. For now I’m going to concentrate on the basics. I know you can get more yardage with newer woods, but I don’t care about distance nearly as much as consistency, and you can’t buy that for any price.
