I was thinking about this the other day when I saw a clip on Payne Stewart. This might not be the best, but definitely in my top three.

I was following Payne at the Masters one year during a practice round. He had hit his drive on #8, a par 5, way out to the right. Back then the rough there was about like our fairways or even tighter. He had walked up to his ball and was waiting on his caddy. He had his driver in hand and apparently got tired of waiting on his caddy. Straight ahead of him was nothing but trees. The fairway is back to his left. What followed was one of the most amazing shots I've seen.

He proceeds to address the ball with his driver. The top of the ball is sitting below the top of his clubface. I'm thinking from that lie how is he going to get it airbourne and over the trees. He aims back toward the fairway and cuts a DRIVER around the trees and up the fairway like it's nothing. The crowd around him went wild.

I've seen a lot of great shots, but this one stood out in my mind because of the club and the situation. I'm sure I'll think of more. How about you ?

I've never attended a pro tournament, but I saw the pro at the driving range once [purposefully - he called the shot before addressing it] hit the ball with a wedge nearly straight up and caught it.

Otherwise... ask me in mid-October, my opinion may vary.

Jack Nicklaus hit to three feet just below the hole on a tough par three in the Senior US Open at Salem Country Club. I followed Tiger around in the pro am and last years second round at the Deustche Bank but seeing Jack strike the golf ball was a treat.

Shaun Micheel's clutch approach shot to three inches on the 72nd hole of the 2003 PGA Championship. He had Chad Campbell on his tail, and that approach shot sealed the deal. I remember the roar of the crowd was deafening. I sat there on the 18th grand stand since 6:00 am that morning, and it was worth every minute I waited.

This one isn't spectacular by any stretch, but it left an impact on me. It was a shot made by Sandy Lyle way back when during the LA Open at Riviera (it was the same year he went on to win the Masters). It was my first PGA event.

He hit a wayward drive left onto a dirt/pebble path behind a tree line. My wife and I were right where his ball stopped. I can still remember the solid thump then the light rain of pebbles falling to the ground. He worked the ball around the tree...he might have been short of the green. It was the sound of that shot and reverberation through the ground that I still remember, not the result. It was then I realized how solid the pros strike the ball.

I did this same thing recently and when I heard the pebbles I thought back to that cool approach by Sandy.

I would have to say Zinger's chip in at the ryder cup. Probably one of the best shots I've seen and under a ton of pressure too. I have to say, The UK has some beautiful scenery. Even though the Americans went on to lose that weekend, it put a little heat on them for Azinger to halve instead of losing the point for the Americans. Only time I'm been to the Belfry, and hopefully not the last......

    • Going to a Friendsgiving tomorrow and I am bringing a no-bake cheesecake. I make the crust too big, but I think it turned out good. The filling is really good.
    • Sure, but how was your alignment? 🙂 Day 53 - 2024-11-22 Mirror work after getting back home. Wife is a superstar for her career/job/whatever.
    • I would say your back nine is the second nine you play that day. It's part of what makes getting some of those holes tougher. Or, if 18 holes are played pretty often, out of A, B, and C, and you often play A and C, A is the front and C is the back, regardless of the order you play them in. That way not birdieing C #7 isn't overcome by birdieing the easier A #7 on a day you played it C-A instead of A-C. But, at the end of the day, nobody really cares except yourself.
    • Day 128: played 9. Nice little even 9, with 2 birdies and 2 bogeys.
    • @DeadMan, I think your approach makes sense. As @dennyjones said, consistency is the key.
