Have an upcoming Myrtle Beach getaway with a new somewhat inexperienced foursome. Handicaps range from 9 to 30+. Wondering what types of game formats would suit all players while insuring a great experience?

I played a game called divorce and quite liked it. You play with 4 people split up into two teams of 2 and you use stableford scoring, except in this game instead of adding up the scores you mulitply them. So if my partner got 2 points and i got 1point we would have a total of 2 points. The trouble comes when you someone gets a wipe as your score for that hole is 0. This game gets very messy, hence the name divorce... All the best!

Subtract your handicap (best guess?) from 36. This becomes the "quota" that you must meet. You get 8 points for an eagle, 4 points for a birdie, 2 points for a par, 1 point for a bogie. These are gross scores on each hole. The goal is to get more points than your quota. The person with the MOST points OVER their quota wins. Example; You are a 16 handicap. 36 minus 16 is 20. 20 is your quota. If you get 6 pars times 2 and 9 bogies times 1, you have 12 + 9 = 21 points. You beat your quota by +1. Say 10 bucks or something to get the attention in the pot? Pay out for lowest score on a hole etc?

If pace of play is an issue...  I find my self playing with this really slow player from time to time.

Two person teams in a scramble.  It really speeds up play if there is a really slow player in the group.  Put a little money on it or a lunch to keep everyone honest.

Here's a calclator to adjust to a team handicap.  http://www.leaderboard.com/SCRAMCAP.HTM

We sometimes just subtract 9 strokes from our known handicaps, and whom ever came closest to their adjusted score won. As an example a 15 handicapper would be trying to get as close to 78 as possible. We figured a 1/2 stroke per hole was good enough. It made everyone want to play better than they normally would.

A scramble format with no restriction on shot selection is usually the better format when handicaps vary over a wide range if you are concerned with pace of play.
