no way should you fight nature in my opinion, if you try to stretch the takeaway and swing wide I think that causes all sorts of problems, I hinge the wrists very early as did seve as does danny willett, tiger swings wide adam scott wide, top players do it there own way I don't think its a massive issue to focus on.Timing, tempo, rhythm far more important, weight shift important, your mate may bomb it but that's natural talent you cant teach that, youll never match him, but is he straight.

That's kind of the answer I didn't want :) I guess he's no more crooked than me - and I'd love to be 50y longer even if it meant I was in the rough more often. Short and crooked is kind of the kombo I'm dealing with right now and it isn't really working :~(

well lets concentrate on the crooked bit that is something we can fix. Please don't try to work too hard on being a bomber, get some teaching, look at a video of the swing, think about your missed shots, try to understand whats happening.

Thing is, I don't (want to) believe that only the crooked thing is fixable. If I knew that was the case, I'd seriously start thinking about something else than golf. I believe that I'd be a scratch golfer if I had a swing that gave me 30 more yards off the tee. And I'm secretly hoping changing the way I hinge the club will lead me towards that goal.

take it you've gone down the route of being properly fitted out ie clubs, balls, shaft launch monitor stuff? This will get you 30 yards.

Improving the angle of attack would give me more yards, yes, but I don't believe it'd give me a better swing. A better and more powerful swing is a lot more than just the 30y on a drive.

...because it gives you more options off the tee and makes the second shot shorter as well. As in the former 140y shot is now the 150y shot.

maybe do some gym work, but I do believe that length of the tee is generally god given, im sure you can get a bit longer but not much, just my opinion I will probably get shot down in flames but that's my opinion.

What do you mean by some should do it sooner, some later? Is there a typical player with some sort of tendency that might benefit from hinging later rather than doing it early?

I mean that some players do it sooner, and some do it later.

Other players, to improve, should try to do it SOONER, because they do it too late for their swing, and others should try to do it LATER, because they do it too early for their swing.

Can't say by looking at a still image.

Maybe at some point I'll have the courage to post my own swing :) I tried to upload my friend's swing but the format was wrong or something. I'll check out that thread, thanks.

To the question: different players hinge at different times. Some should do it sooner; some later.

Yep either one works. @Osmond some players have to think about their hinging rates while others never think about it. Just depends on what their priority piece is.

I would guess that there are other reasons your friend hits it far.

You need to upload it to Youtube.  That is pretty easy.  You can upload it as "unlisted" and it will be semi-private.  Then copy the URL.  When you post it in a thread, click the little film icon in the edit bar of a reply and paste the youtube URL.

    • That was a good watch. When I started working on pelvis in the backswing. I thought, this sounds contradictory to those leg straightening threads on the site. Erik has already done a correction. Then the last lesson we went more down the route of feeling the right knee gains flex. It doesn’t, but the feeling keeps my knee position in a good range. Also, I just realized how much extra work my right hip needed to do to stabilize the body with the proper weight shift. Those glute and hip stabilizers got worked. 🤣 I wish this evolution in the golf instruction happened 20 years ago! 😭
    • I've been Playing Golf for: 40 yrs My current handicap index or average score is: 4.0 factor My typical ball flight is: Straight however sometimes slight draw. The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: squirt to the right due to to much arm not enough turn. • The first issue Erik spoke about is something we worked on for my swing during both GEARS sessions. GEARS was showing my pelvis center moving towards the ball during the back swing. I wasn’t the 4” guy though! This forced me to correct on the downswing to give myself space. My hip rotation was to high as well. We corrected it by first getting the weight off my heels in my stance and getting my posture correct. Then the feel was shifting back into my right hip at a 45 degree angle. This kept my pelvis center from moving towards the ball at the start of the backswing. I also didn’t sway back as much as I felt I did because of the angle I was shifting. Feel Ain’t Real. The cool thing about GEARS is as you work on something you can see the exact (Real) change happening. On video, it is much harder to spot this issue because of the 2D nature of filming. But I know what to look for now. Sadly, I was hurt all last year and most of this year so I really haven’t been able to work on it much. I did do a lot of backswing work though.
