I played for years with the driver, 4 wood, 7 wood, and 9 wood, along with 4i - SW..  I have switched to hybrids over the last couple of years and and now carry the driver, 3 wood, and 2 through 6 hybrids, and then 7i - SW. It has made an enormous difference in my game especially as I age.  I started at age 40 and I would have to clock a 3 wood to get 200 - 210 off the fairway, and it was about a 20% shot.  Now I can hit the 2 hybrid 200 -215 yards and be in the vicinity, if not on the green, about 80% of the time.  I love my Ping G15 driver and hit it longer than someone my age and ability should hit a golf ball,  but my long and mid approach game is better than it has ever been.  I would rather be 150 out than 120 - the hybrids are just so consistent for me.

If woods work well for you then of course use them - I have never heard anyone criticize another golfer for using woods off the fairway.

I found that i couldnt hit hybrids as consistent as i could 5wd,4wds.To me the bigger head of a 4wd and 5wd help with ball striking compared to the  hybrids smaller head. The times i did hit the hybrid it felt awesome but i never knew what was going to happen compared to consistency of the woods.
