I am new, just put together set of clubs and now I need a bag. I see there are several different types. Is there just a standard bag type that could be used for everything? I imagine I will be walking on nice days to get the exercise and getting a cart when I am with my buddies. I see there are cart bags, carry bags, stand bags, etc. Is there something that just works fine whether I carry or use the cart?

If you're walking and carrying, then I believe a stand bag is the way to go.  All of them are also compatible to a cart.

If, when you're walking you like to use a pull or push cart, then cart bags are also a possibility for you.  A little bigger, pockets usually all on one side, etc.

I think a stand bag is the way to go for most people. I wonder if it's a regional thing, but I think I've seen a cart bag once here on LI. The big upside to me of cart bags, as @Golfingdad mentioned, is the better storage space. I was in the market for a new bag over Black Friday and I found cart bags had better organizers. That said, I like stand bags for their versatility and their stability when I take it to the range, chipping, putting area, etc. Having everything at an angle facing you is also a positive in my book. I bought a Callaway Chev bag that I'm happy with, but there's tons out there to try. One thing to consider is making sure it works well for your setup. My old stand bag had an issue with the side bottom slots being narrow and the clubs getting wedged in and stuck, pulling apart the liner. For my new bag, I went to golfsmith, took that bag to the demo clubs section and literally filled it with clubs the way I'd have mine set up and tried pulling them out and putting them back in. The bag I'd been most excited about got disqualified this way. Definitely worth trying as long as you're OK with a few odd stares and go in at an off peak time haha.

Oh, and just for fun, if I was getting a new bag from Dicks this is what I'd get:

(A couple year old version of the above is what I have now.  My previous bag was a Titleist that was very similar.  Turns out that Sun Mountain makes those too, so I obviously have had some luck with them lately, so I'd stick with them.  All bags are pretty similar, quality wise though, Id imagine)

I'd agree, a stand bag will work for carrying, cart, or what have you..What's important to me is the way the straps are configured. I have a top of the line Nike, older stand bag, but I hate the Izzo straps, always getting tangled..I like the system that's on the Titliest stand bags.

I bought my Son the new TayorMade hybrid stand bag, and it has a good strap system, it has the 14 way dividers so your clubs don't get stuck..lol

I went to dicks and tried out all of their bags. I am glad I tried them too. I ended up getting the callaway chevron stand bag in black. It was on sale for $130, although I went for features/comfort and not the price. I really liked it the best out of all the bags. I debated between that and a nike bag that felt really good too. The taylormade, ogio, and titleist did not feel as good to me. They all seemed like good bags but the chevron and nike just stood out compared the rest once i tried them all.

I got the same in blue. I think you'll be happy with it. Enjoy!

I pulled the trigger on a Wilson Staff Nexus today. Pretty much every review I'd read said it was by far and away one of the best bags for 2014 and the fact that I got it for less than half price is a massive bonus. For me the important features were:

- Stand - I wanted the ability for it to stand upright, e.g. without legs while fully loaded (it's stored in a cupboard and I hate having my current Sun Mountain Three 5 leaning on stuff in there!)
- Weight - As I walk 99% of the time and I have a trolley/cart bag for times I don't I wanted a nice light weight bag.
- Strong - My Three 5 has a broken cuff at the top where it was lifted by the cuff one time and for some reason snapped.

- Adequate storage - I wanted a Goldilocks bag with not too much space for junk but not too little space that I couldn't carry my normal gear.
- Looks - I wanted a bag that looks good. Not "flash" but not dowdy either. A nice middle-ground.
- Price - There's no way on this earth I'd pay out hundreds for a bag, I don't care if it has flashing lights, built in GPS and makes me an espresso every 3 holes just the way I like it.

I like the bag so much in fact I ignored the Mizuno Tour stand bag even though it was also available, also on sale, also looks great and would match all my clubs. lol

Dragon that is a sexy looking bag you got there!  Me likey.  I think later this year a new cart bag will be in order.  Not that my old one is bad.  I hate the way it fits on my Clickgear cart.  I want one that fits and doesn't flop to one side like my current Nike does.  May give Wilson a good look.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
