As we all know, Some people will accidently hit their ball from #1 into the driving range and the ball will get picked up by the cart that picks up the balls. I personally now check every ball I hit because I've found numerous balls in my driving range basket before. So, what is the best ball you've ever picked up while just hitting in the driving range.

Mine are

A titliest ball(don't know kind)
and
A Callaway HX Pearl

My course has two driving ranges. The first, near the clubhouse, usually has stray balls spill out onto #10 and 12 of Pioneer, as well as #18 of Willows. Of course, that goes the other way around as well. Stray range balls find the fairways and good balls end up in the driving range. Going up #18, a long par 5, I've put more than my share of balls into the range with my 3 wood. The other, out at Fox Run, occasionally has stray balls find their way down by the 9th green, usually near the sand trap or by the cart path.

I've found a lot of balls there. Mostly, it's crappier balls from hackers such as Top Flites and other no-namers (probably because said hackers can't even hit the ball properly anyway), but I've found the occasional Pro V1 in there or Callaway. Found a couple HX Tour's in there just about a week ago in fact.

I've found both ProV1 and ProV1x, as well as the occasional Nike One. Anyone who hits driver further than 180 from the whites and hooks the balls is going to put it in the range. I find a non-range ball in almost every bucket, but rarely are they keepers.

The only balls I don't pocket are top flites and pinnacles. I will use any other type of ball.

Haven't found any Pro V1's at the range...but have a fair number found on the course.

Titelist NXT's I do get at the range as well as Callaway Warbirds & HX's, also a lot of Nikes but I don't care for those balls & just wack them back into the range.

Strangest thing, I actually found a black nike ball on Saturday. The whole ball is black, not white. I have never seen anything like it, it doesn't appear to be painted (like the yellow range balls), but made this way purposely.

The range balls at my range are Callaways anyway. Dont Find too many good ones but this topic made me remember a funny story:

A group of Chinese men were at the range one day a few stalls down and didnt speak much english. They had rented clubs and bought 5 boxes of brand new titleists to hit at the range. The guy beside me had to explain to them how they didnt need to use their own balls.

I know that Nike was/is (not sure if it is still going on) doing a promotion, and if u found an all black ball, then you get to play a round with Tiger Woods. That may be one of those balls, did you keep it?

Also, I have found ALOT of TaylorMade's at my driving range, along with the occasional Pro V1/x and Nike One. Also I find Pinnacles, Top Flites, and other lower name brands, but I don't keep those

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
