I have a daughter who likes to grab daddy's putter while he practices during the winter... or will just grab one of daddy's clubs and start pushing balls around with it... I know The Sand Trap Universe is going to think I'm nuts, but I would like to get her 2-3 clubs so she can maybe go to the putting green or the range with me in the summer (she'll be closer to 2 then) I'm not molding the next Michelle Wie or Lexi Thompson here, but if she I start her young, it would give her a game to play hopefully into the next century... Any thoughts on what I could do, Dick's has a Top Flite XLj set for $80 that has a Fairway Driver, 9-iron and a putter, but it seems a little long for her... she is tall for her age (32" already, taking after her 6' 5" dad)... I can add a 7I and a SW later if she gets serious about the game... any suggestions?

I would go with US Kids.  I am a golf instructor and really like the weight of the US Kids.  Also if a club breaks, you just take it to your vendor and they should be able to replace it at little to no cost (mostly shipping).  You will not get that kind of customer service from Top Flight (Dicks).  They may cost you a couple dollars more, but with the quality and customer service you will receive.  It is well worth it.

I would say get her a putter. A kiddo that age won't have the longest attention span, so if she just had a putter I think she would be quite happy -  especially if you get her an animal headcover!

Note: A clever dad can use the headcover as a talking puppet during rest breaks... :-D

The kids who use them seem to like them. I understand they also come in 3" increments.

She seems to like frogs... I looked into baby's first club, which is an 18 inch putter... but like I said before, she'll just pick up one of my clubs (lately it's been my Adams hybrid or my Nickent 3w), and will just grab it and start pushing balls around with them one handed... she recently grabbed three or four balls out of my shag and put them in her room...

No expert here, no kids but just an opinion.  I'd say get her a putter from US Kids or similar sized to fit her or near fit.  Find a bucket of the cheap coloured foam practice balls.  I've seen them at Dunham's and Wally Worlds.  She would probably enjoy the colours and being foam the possabilitys of Boo-Boo's dramaticly decreases.

And finally giving said "gifts" at an appropriate time would be awesome.  Birthdays come to mind foremost. It would be epic my man.  It certainly would make an impression.

And lastly enjoy spending time with the little one.  Before you know it she'll be asking for the car keys if you know what I mean.  I'm green with envy.  I'd love to have someone  to share with.  Enjoy it my man enjoy the heck out of it.

wow girls must be a lot different than boys. I have a 2 yr old and 4 year old (both boys) and if I brought them to a putting green they would fill up the holes with dirt and rip apart the grass. If I gave them access to clubs/balls they would hit each other with them, hit the green, and throw the balls at people and buildings....haha. I have a pond in my backyard so I take them fishing sometimes, their attention span is about 2 mins max and then they throw the bait in the water at the fish.

Instead of dropping $80 on a set of clubs that may or may not get much use, try looking at craigslist.  I got my 3-year old a set of clubs (Driver, 9-iron, putter) for $20.  When he outgrows them in a couple years, I'm pretty sure I'll sell them and find a replacement set for the same price.  How good do the clubs actually have to be at that age?  As long as the kid is strong enough to swing it and hit the ball, you can't go wrong.

The U.S. Kids is a great starter set. I've had them for my son since he was 2. He just turned 5 and I'm going to get him the Nike Stage 1 Junior VR set this year to begin taking lessons with. But the Top Flite set you mentioned would be too long for her at 2. Even though she is young you don't want to develop bad mechanics early on. My son only really ever used the putter and 7 iron out of the U.S. Kids set but he can swing them all efficiently and I dedicate that to the correct length and giving him slight pointers to make sure his hands are correct and letting him watch me and learn to swing correctly.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
