Played today on relatively short course 6000 yards from white tees.68.6 RATING 124 SLOPE.About 45 degrees lil windy and lil bit of sleet falling for a hole.Shot 81.Had 35 putts and hit 7 greens.I guess only prob i had was couple fat shots since ground was lil wet and didnt hit my chips close enough for short par putts. No doubles and hit every fairway with driver.3 over on the par 3s.1 over on the par 5s and 5 over on the par 4s.All in all i did fairly good considering the conditions but think i gotta get my chips within that 6 foot circle.

Hitting it closer, from the fairway or around the green, is an easier way to lower your score. The problem for me has always been it's harder to get it close than it is to make a 6-10 foot putt. YMMV....

Putting has always been very important, probably the most important part of my game with the exception of maybe tee shots. I've been in the 5-10 handicap range for 20 years or so and can't remember a good round of golf when I didn't make multiple putts outside of 6 feet. For me, putting is such a huge factor because it's the easiest part of my game to improve. I can practice putting

every day indoor or out and can get feedback on how my stroke is working. I can't do that with my wedges or ball striking. Knowing my putting setup and stroke keys and then being able to apply them in my practice and then on the course are the biggest key to keeping my scores as low as I can get them.

Have you been reading this site much? You cannot make all of your six-footers. Impossible.

How good do you expect to get with putts outside of 6 ft?

I dont know about 6 footers but i feel you need to make around 80-90% of 3 footers though.Id say 6 footers are the distance where you be expected to make on a regular basis unless they are sidewinders.

It would depend on how far outside of 6ft., ;-) how much slope, how much break and how fast the greens are. I play in the mid atlantic area so Bermuda grain is not a factor. The basic 6-10 footer, flat, little right to left, on a good day I'll make 4 or 5. I'll make a bomb(15ft +) or two as well,

but probably 3 putt once, maybe twice.

On a bad day, I'll make 1 maybe 2 putts outside of 6 feet.

Back when I was at my peak, I used to practice putts on the same line at the same hole on the practice green at my home course. I started at 1 foot and would go back a foot when I made or reputt if I missed. I could putt out and back to 12-14 feet on good days and not miss. It was a huge confidence builder for me when I got out on the course. I really thought, and sometimes still think, If I can read it I can make it. That said, I realize they aren't all going to go in. But  having the mindset that I can make any of them was a huge factor for me. I guess my point is, If I thought putts over 6ft aren't made very often, I would never have shot the scores I did.

I played with a senior golfer who made 10-20 foot putts. It was amazing. This is how he still made pars. We were waiting for a tee box to clear, and putted downhill from 45 feet. He hit the edge of the hole once and 3 putted once out of 10 attempts. The rest of his attempts were 2 putt tap in or 3 footers. If any of us had his putting skill we could very likely be single digit. 9 holes and less that a dozen putts. I asked him how long he'd been golfing, and he said "a very long time". Guessing over 50 years? Impressive.
