Back in 2008 I was fitted for my Studio Select Newport 1.5(blade) putter. To get my speed, line, etc, I have 20 grams in each end, and had a weight added into the top of the shaft to smooth my stroke. Unfortunately never asked how much. This past season, I was told I was decelerating on some putts, and also turning the face on contact(opening, closing). I am sure these are mental, and/or need practice to resolve. YET, am thinking changing the weights could help. Scotty Cameron store sells up to 25 grams each, and the Custom Shop, where I am thinking of refinishing my putter to black, and redo paint fills, will go up to 30 grams. Can these 5 to 10 grams addition of weight really make a difference? Yes I can go back and test these, yet the fitting costs are not cheap. And I would rather pay the cost for a new driver and wood fitting. I also want to get a thicker putter grip(Super Stroke).

Before you go and practice "accelerating" through your putts, read this.

I agree with Mike on this.  I would try the new grip first and work on the stroke first.  What kind of grip do you have now?

I will read that Mike. Thanks.

Boogie, I switched my Scotty grip for a mid sized softer Winn putter grip. Yet I understand that a thick, fat grip, takes the wrist play out of putts, which I noticed myself doing. This is why I want a Super Stroke.

I've done the same.  I've played with a Winn mid-size and a Scotty mid-size pistol grip for 4+ years.  My putting stroke is pretty consistent and my aim is very good.  I was fitted to my putter and grip.

Recently I switched to a Superstroke 3.0.  I played four rounds last month in Florida and my distance control and aim was very good.  I even got compliments from a golf instructor that played with us one round.  What I like about the Superstroke is it is easy to grip the putter the same way every time.  I think this helps maintain a consistent grip pressure and therefore a consistent stroke.

I would try the grip first, then play with taping nickles to the head to see if the extra weight helps distance control.  Compare the weight of your current grip to the Superstroke you put on.  If they aren't the same, then your swing weight will change.  For me, the SS 3.0 was a little lighter, so the swing weight went up.  The putter felt a bit heavier to my hands.

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
