Flex it on the edge of a table and see if the crack opens up. Impossible to tell for sure from the photo. Not even sure if the shaft is steel or graphite.

Hold the club head in one hand and grip in the other and see if it opens the crack when you twist them opposite directions.  Looks like a superficial scratch to me.

Thanks for the answers any idea where the scratch came from?? I just took it out and noticed it was scratched today when I was cleaning my clubs this morning..

I have fairly new clubs, all graphite shafts except for my wedges and I've noticed small little scratches occasionally. I think sliding them in and out of the golf bag, no matter how careful, we pick up these little things. I do try to keep my clubs and grips clean too. I wouldn't worry too much unless the scratch goes on into the graphite, more than likely what you have is just a scratch in the paint of the shaft.

You can get some clear paint protection film from an automotive aftermarket shop and it will keep them in great shape. Its clear, self sticking and designed to remove leaving no glue.

Looks like a scratch. Play it until it breaks if it's a crack. I've never seen a shaft crack.

@SavvySwede thanks and by the way it's a graphite shaft. Sorry I forgot to mention that..

When Graphite shafts get damaged, it will splinter and usually only occurs from impact against the shaft.

I agree with everyone who indicates it appears as only a scratch.

Caring for graphite shafts is difficult, as the are delicate and can easily be scratched no matter how carefully you handle them.

Most people use golf bags which have cushioned dividers and use head covers with a long sock to protect the driver and woods.

Irons are most difficult to protect the shafts, especially near the club head end.

    • Day 159 1-19 Flow drill while attempting to add arch in wrist on downswing. Not where it needs to be but felt good working on swing flow.
    • Day 1 (19 Jan 26) - after a week lay-off due to travels, felt great to get in some drills in the backyard today.  Started with lead arm only short pitches focused on squared face and light divot post ball.  Haven’t done this in a while and it showed, with some skulls and slices.  Settled into easy flighted balls - wrapped up with standard two handed swings.  Good restart to the daily drills.

    • Day 19, 1/19.  Finished work in time to spend 25 minutes hitting balls (hit 15) indoors, off a mat, into the net.  Usual focus.
    • Day 30 - 2026-01-19 Got 10 minutes in on the mat / net working on exagerrating movements I'm working on. And grip. Also worked with my friendly AI to summarize key negative tendencies I have so that I can build a personal checklist to follow. Will do more mirror work tonight.
