I am in the market for a new 52 degree wedge.. I am so confused on what to get..

I am looking for one that will create the most spin, I went to my local pro shop and they have a new 588 clev. 52 degree wedge, it says on the shaft, that this club is designed to rust..

Why do you want it to rust? Whats the whole point to a rusting head of a club?
The pro there said he doesn't believe in them at all, and rather get a 52 degree Callaway chrome wedge.

I think I really want the Volkey 52 degree wedge, but which one?
I use it from 100-20 yards, so I am really confused on which one to get..

Also what about the volkey, do they rust?

The general idea behind letting your wedges rust (this is only really possible if you buy a raw wedge that is designed to rust, or if you mistreat a chrome wedge) is that it reduces almost all of the glare off of the face at address. Glare tends to increase more as you open the face, but with a rusted wedge there is no glare.

Also, some people claim that rusted wedges create more spin because of extra friction from the rust (I don't know how much true that is... it could be pure fallacy). There are some disadvantages to rust though, besides the obvious mess that it creates in your bag and car, and on your clothes. The grooves on your wedges will tend to wear faster because of the lack of protection that the chroming process provides. Raw wedges look pretty cool when they're rusted over, but if you don't want to deal with the disadvantages, you could go with black wedges that have started becoming popular. I personally play the Cleveland CG10 wedges and have the Black Pearl finish. I pretty much cuts out all of the glare that rusted wedges do, without the side effects. The only problem I've found is merely aesthetic; after acquiring some sole and face wear, it is a bit more noticeable than a satin wedge or rusted wedge.

I don't know about this specific club, but certain grades of steel are actually designed to rust. It creates a protective coating impervious to the elements over the surface of the steel. The USX Tower (Steel building) in Pittsburgh is faced with a steel like this. Several years ago they had to pay all their neighbors to clean the rust off their buildings that had come from the Steel building.

And an easy solution to the messy bag or car!!! I have club head covers that are a pain in the A$$, I never use them, so I bet just using one for my rust wedge will prevent the mess and also look cool :)

i have an rtg (raw tour grind) cleveland. initially, i had to keep a piece of steel wool handy to clean off the rust once in awhile, whenever necessary. now, it has developed a nice patina (except on the sole and the face), and as long as i keep it dry, it does not rust anymore, and then, only in spots. it was never messy or dirty as long as i buffed it with the steel wool; i don't know what those other folks are talking about. you know, alot of players would wrap their raw clubs in a wet towel to get them to rust up. those might get messy.

in the bag:
driver-titleist D2 10.5* w/aldila nv shaft
3-adams speedline fast 10 w/aldila shaft
hybrid-titleist 585 17* w/aldila shaft
irons-titleist 735cm w/ttdg s-300 shafts

wedges-cleveland 588, 53* and 60* w/ttdg shafts

putter-scotty circa 62 #1, gun metal finish

I agree that the grooves wear out on rust wedges. My Taylormade RAC Rust wedges are BEAT and they are 2 seasons old. They will be replaced next season. I can't tell you how many people have asked me "Why do you have those old clubs in your bag?" or "What's wrong with those clubs?"

It's going to be Satin finish for me next time.

Naaa. .I want to have one for many reasons. But that right there is a great conversational piece.. People would ask why you have a rusty club compared to the nice clubs in your bag and you can give them a great reason as to why its rusty

I have wedges in RTG (Raw that will rust), BeCu, gun metal and chrome plated. Ican't tell much difference, except for glare off the chrome. Buy whatever feels good and gives you confidence. I usually buy by the amount of bounce and the sole grind. Of course, I'm a club addict and have to get everything :)

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
    • Day 2: 2025.12.27 Eighteen holes at Kauri Cliffs. Focusing on trying to keep flex in right leg during backswing.
    • Day 136 12-26 Had a different practice planned today but life happened. Worked on "wide to wide" and still working on remaining flowy. Starting the club head in front of the ball as a drill, is helping with the flow of the swing.
