Let me know if you all have any advice. I am 36 and haven't golfed in 18 years. I golfed tons as a kid, played and won many tournaments, then quit at age 18. Now I am just getting back into it. Thus far in the last two months I have been on the course about 12 times. I bought a walking pass at my local country club for the year so I can golf as much as I want to for now.  But I suck. I do not remember anything.

When I started two months ago I was shooting around 125. Just this past weekend I had that down to 104. Here is my plan to get better. My goal is to just be a good golfer and have fun. I would love to get good enough that I do not look like an idiot when I play with a few of my friends who can shoot below 80. So here is my plan:

1. Post my video here for you all to slam my form and tell me what I should be doing haha. I slice, I hook, I do not hit the fairway:)

2. Possibly sign up for evolvr. Can I do it for just a month or two for the $40 a month????

3. Ordered ben hogans 5 steps book and LSW book. They should come this week.

4. Going to the range or course 3-5 times per week. Ideally Golf 2-3 times and range 2-3 times. Or sometimes I do both on the same day. I mostly work my driver and long range shots. My short game 7-9 iron is actually good.

5. Search the heck out of this site. I have found tons of good info on lowering your score. At this point I just need beginner tips.

If anyone has any tips feel free to share. Otherwise I will post my scores/updates on this thread as I continue my journey.

Definitely for number 1 - don't know much about evolvr so can't help you with the pricing, but at 104 your aim should be to improve your swing however you can; lessons would certainly be a good start. LSW is a great read and will help you focus your practice - I personally spend more time on the course than the range as I feel I get into a false comfort zone (and I hate mats). Just make sure that when you do hit the range, you're always picturing shots you want to hit and changing club/target all the time to replicate what you'd do on the course. I'd also start tracking your scores and making notes of how you lost shots, i.e. duffing pitches, three putting (if so, short/mid/long?), poor drives etc. This should also help you work out your best strategies off the tee. Hope that helps and good luck!

Currently focusing on: Key 4 - shorter backswing.

  1. Start with 1.  No one will slam your swing.  We all can improve.  If you have trouble with a poster, let us know.
  2. Evolvr is excellent.  If you can afford it, I strongly recommend it.
  3. Start with LSW.  Hogan's book is nice, but it is based on his swing and his body, not yours.
  4. Range work is nice, but play more if you can.
  5. Start in the Swing Thoughts section. There are a ton of great threads there.

Here is a collection of excellent threads.

Thanks for the tips. To answer some of the questions...

I will get a video up today. I am definitely doing everything wrong so any help in the swing dept would be helpful.

I think I am going to try evolvr even if for just 2-3 months. I cannot afford it for a year but I could swing a few months so I am glad they have that option.

I have unlimited range balls with my club membership so I try to hit the range before or after I play. So I generally try to do both. But if I have the choice I usually just play unless its supposed to rain/storm. The range is regular grass only, no mats. When I do play I usually just walk 9 holes. With kids and such 18 several times a week would cause some wife aggro:)

I am using swing by swing phone app to track my scores, shots, #of puts, sand, penalties.

Officially down to 96! One month of evolr, posting videos on here, and golf analyzer app have been helping tons with my 2-3 days of golfing/practice. Shot my best 9 today - 47 on a par 36. My stats are indicating that my 3 puts and chips are my major problems right now. Driving is slicing hard too but the distance makes up for it.
