I play over at Pinehurst Resort every weekend.  Here is a list if I had to rank them best to worst. #8, #2, #7, #4, #9, #6, #5, #1, #3. Go play Dormie Club just outside Pinehurst, its one of the best courses in the area!

Gosh, walk on a-la-carte rates are insane!! But I am sure well worth.

Playing a mix of top tier + second tier, (except #2) -  #4, 7, 8, 9 from 06/07-06/10 + staying at the Manor for total of well inside of a grand. We might try to do an afternoon round at one of the others, maybe #6.

I don't see anything "second-tier" in any of those, you'll have a great time.  Another good thing for you is that the Manor Inn is the closest of the Pinehurst facilities to Maxie's, my favorite bar in the village.

Well, strike any 2nd tier mention at all. I have no basis for any tier rating. Just some ratings on reviews on the net. I would think ALL of them miles nicer than anything we play here in the VB area or some of the Southern Pines courses we played few years ago.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but my son is going to play Pinehurst 5,8  and 2. Of the three, he can only play either 5 to 8 during a practice round.

For the people that have played there - if you could choose between 5 or 8, which one would you choose? I guess another way to say this, is which course 5 to 8 would best prepare you for the other two?

I have heard #8 is top notch, although BIG price difference between #5 and #8.

Of the two, #8 is the better course, by a big margin.  It also features a number of crowned greens, similar to those at #2, so it would probably be the best preparation for #2.  #5 is a more "standard" design.  Generally, they try to keep green speeds and other conditions similar for all the courses.  There's a really big putting green and separate short-game practice area at the main clubhouse, he may want to spend some time there getting used to what are normally very firm conditions.  I'd suggest putting from off the green whenever possible, and that takes some work if you're not sued to doing it.

Definitely play #8. Like Dave said, #8 and #2 have very similar greens. Both are the new Championship Bermuda and are very fast and firm. Go buy a yardage book in the Pro Shop for both #8 and #2, it will be the best $8 you have ever spent. It will help you with the slopes of the greens tremendously.

Just a few tips: 1.) On approach shots, don't play to the yardage of the flag. These greens are firm as shit and you wont be able to hold many shots on the greens. Play each approach 5 to 7 yards short of the flag. 2.) Spent most of your practice time chipping off tight lies and like Dave said putting from off the greens too. You will have those shots all day lol. 3.) Get use to the speed of the greens and practice lag putting the greens roll for days.

I wasn't aware the greens were that fast. Incredible. I don't think we have anything that fast in Hawaii under normal conditions.

From my limited experience playing in Hawaii, you're right, I've never seen really fast greens there, although some of the newer paspalum grasses roll a little better than the older-style bermuda.  One last bit of advice, I was once told by a caddie that ALL putts at the #2 course break away from the clubhouse.  This was before the course renovations a few years back, but I'd bet its still the same still.
